For UK road users, they may be interested in reading where the Government is, with the future of minor roads known as 'whites' and access to other minor roads, National Parks, off road use etc.
You will recall that one of our local Councils found an imaginative way in reducing road maintenance costs, by placing temporary road closure notices on various roads in dire need of maintenance, and then renewing them to provide a permanent closure status.
LARA, and other user groups have supported a court action to challenge the actions, and it has now got to the point where the Government are looking at a decision.
The 'Motor Vehicles:Rights of way' committee, have been asked to provide a definitive report in 18 months time.

Depressed in the UK!

I hope we might escape that here in The Highlands. My job takes me to some very remote places and some of the roads this winter have been hacked to bits by snow, ice and gritters. The local roads teams have been quick to do temporary patches and I guess the tar and chip teams will be busy this summer.

I think the LARA interest is mainly in the continued public use by vehicles of unsurfaced roads and tracks but it's a shame if they are having to defend previously well-surfaced roads.

I do think we might have to lower our expectations of the surface of very minor roads but many places up here have only one, very narrow and twisty access road; maybe we will have to go back to access by sea which is how many places functioned for centuries.

Classic boat forum? It wouldn't be the same Rolling Eyes
