The pic featuring the Lambretta on the home page today also has a Commer truck in view. Some had the fabulously odd but wonderful TS3 2 stroke diesel fitted. I would love to find one of those......

Alas, the two-strokes these days fetch a high premium. I quite like the V range Commers with the Perkins diesel, that's a nice engine and a lot cheaper.

The TS3 was a wonderful engine killed off, I understand, by Chrysler. The TS4 was in the pipeline and it promised to be even better. In terms of weight, power output and fuel economy the TS3 was special.

As you say they sell for a good price if you can find one......

There are two starter motors which fit the TS3 - one turns the correct way,the other doesn't - found out the hard way along time ago, cheers,JD.

You did not always need that to get them running backwards! I have never seen it but I have heard of instances where the engine can "cough" at low revs and off it goes, in reverse rotation. One of its charms.

You are right about the starter rotations. I had a TS3 Commer a couple of years back that had to have the starter re-built. That was a very expensive job.

My father had a 1967 Commer 3.5 tonne van that was fitted with a low compression Humber Super Snipe engine. If memory serves me right it returned 8mpg on a good day, but what a lovely sound it made trundling along at 40mph.

Certainly the one with the faulty starter wouldn't start backwards - it was only when someone notice the fan was turning the wrong way that it was twigged what the 'fault' was. With everything that had been removed(to look for the fault) put back & another starter fitted, it started first touch of the key.
Speaking of two strokes, how about the Foden. My friend had one as a logger
& was an early starter to get the first load. When he went up through the village(keeping the revs in the correct place) & stirring the 16 gears, every one was up early, but what a fantastic sound - even better when it was loaded. We had a Field Marshall tractor which could be made to run backwards if caught just as it was stopping ,cheers,JD.
