It's a wonderful car mind, there was quite a write-up in The Automobile about it.

It's quite superb, how I'd love to own that and do an oily rag restoration rather than the total job that it's likely to receive.

Yes, I read The Automobile article and was pleased to see they advocated preserving this car rather than wholesale restoration.
I am with David 100% on the "oily rag" route.
It remains to be seen what the new owner will do with it but I hope he goes for preservation.
What do others think?

The interest in "barn find" and "oily rag" cars has been growing rapidly in recent years, with such cars now being invited to high-brow events that were once the preserve of Pebble Beach-type cars only.

It may well end up being restored from head to toe, which would be a great shame, but I think there's a good chance that it'll be preserved, with just the essential mechanics underneath being restored as required.

Is this a case it looks like somebody has more money than sense. It was expected to do 30k but 695k is plain crazy considering the state it is in.

That's great news! So much for all those VDP sports special conversions.

30k???

The £30k is what the owner thought it was worth. But the "professionals" at the auction house estimated at at under £200k so you could ask whose estimate was the worst?

Sooner or later it'll get 'raped'. It'll not be long before it ends up in the hands of some stinking rich idiot who'll have it gutted and rolled out on the Concours circuit looking like a copy of a Bentley. It'll be all new leather and wood and paint and of no real interest to anybody except the collectors.

I wonder if you've ever seen a really good restoration done by the most able craftsmen. I also think people forget that the only chance really gifted craftsmen, who love what they do, get to do this work is when "some stinking Rich idiot" wants it done.

I thinks there's a lot of rubbish talked about keeping tatty old things as they are. Usually they were parked up because they were completely worn out, every bit of them from disintegrating bodies, to dried out and cracking leather and unbelievably worn mechanically. To continue using them is to get closer to destroying them. If this car isn't restored, it'll be cleaned up, stored in a perfect environment and shown by a "stinking Rich idiot" in the conservation class. Not many people still drive them for fun, usually it's for specific events.

The main benefit of finding a lovely original car like this is that it hasn't suffered decades of crappy repairs and restoration by penny pinching incompetents who could afford to do the job properly. So many Brit cars have suffered this way.

Fair point, but this car doesn't NEED to be restored at all.Sure, I agree, if it were knackered and needed saved then rich people are the very folk for the job. Tragically however, they generally can't keep their hands off stuff that's doing just fine being old. This car need recommissioned...not subject to a 'bare metal, nut and bolt restoration' as so many of these things are.

I saw it happen in my neck of the woods recently....perfectly nice original Riley. Lovely solid, smelly old car with no rotten wood. It vanished for a year or so then reappeared as an utterly uninteresting pastiche. Seen the same thing happen to an Austin Healey 3000 a while ago too. Fabulous original leather....thrown away and replaced by something that looked like you could see your reflection in it. In both cases the job was done by somebody with loads of money and no taste.

When was the last time you ever saw an original XK ? I've not seen one in years. They've all been 'done'

I'd love it if we could keep tabs on this car...see what happens to it.

This car was much as that Bentley is except that it was still drive able if shabby. The body hasn't been recovered, just oiled, but it has been totally restored by the very very best craftsmen in the country and it looks magnificent.

It was done for an American billionaire, a really nice man who gave millions to towns he lived in for swimming pools and libraries, who had Meshersmidts made in East Germany to help the local economy and Spitfires built in the UK. He was a gent.
