Although I don't go out of my way to find old photos of boats, a few have turned up over the years. Rather than leave them in an album it seems like a good idea to pop a few of them on here, and open up a general thread for nautical matters.

This one, of City of Marseilles, was taken at Southampton Docks in September 1926.

A steam vessel, it was damaged by a mine left by a U-Boat in 1940. More info here:

Interesting stuff.

This tiny photo isn't the best...

Despite this note on the rear, I'm still unclear as to the actual vessel shown

Hello Rick,

The second ship is HMS Justicia, a World War 1 troopship. It was sunk by U-boats towards the end of the war off the coast of Ireland, and the wreck appears to be still there.

Full story is here:

Geoff

Oh and I like the idea of a marine thread; it ties in nicely with the aeronautical thread and many of us are intersted in other forms of transport.

Fascinating read, thanks Geoff. The camouflage paint job was pretty impressive wasn't it.

If anyone had described this scene to me, I may have had my doubts.

and of course in true OCC fashion, a photograph without a story just doesn't cut it.

Some of the 'dazzle' colour schemes are awesome. But imagine the amount of paint required!?!

A curious piece of history. I sailed to Australia, with my folks on a ship commanded by Captain Cook!

The Donaldson line SS Athenia, was the first ship sunk at the beginning of WW2. The master was James Cook. He then became the master of Athenia's sister ship, the SS Letitia. This ship had a varied career during the war becoming an armed merchant cruiser, a troop ship, and a hospital ship. After the war it was re-named the SS Empire Brent and took war brides to Canada. It then was used on the Australia/New Zealand run.

We boarded the Empire Brent in late 1949 from Glasgow, having gone North by train. We docked in Melbourne on the 6th of January 1950, and I still remember some things about that voyage, including the fact that the ship was under the control of Captain Cook.

A few years later the New Zealand Government bought the vessel for use as a migrant ship, still under the same master, and they re-named the vessel the SS Captain Cook.

I imagine that the gentleman concerned could well have been disbelieved with officialdom when he would give his name as Captain James Cook, of the good ship Captain Cook!

The TV series on Clyde built ships with David Hayman was worth watching.

Long-term forum-ers may remember pigtin's tales of boat ownership, and fishing trips taken in it:

A few more photos of old boats and ships to include here, before they get filed away.

To begin with, a trio of photos featuring a vessel named "RANE". Other than being registered in Stockholm, I know nothing of this old girl. These photos were taken at Watchet, on August 26th 1960.

A random photo that may as well be included here too

Finally for now, a snapshot of "Lady Silvy" taking trippers around the lake at Longleat Safari Park, August 21st 1967. The distinctive boat was introduced into service earlier that year, in March '67.

Does the boat survive?

Hi
From:- http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/svea.shtml

Quote:
Rane 1268 tons
1927 built by A/S Helsingørs Jernskibs og Maskinbyggeri, Helsingør |
1963 sold to Stylianos D Meletis, Greece renamed Elli,
1967 sold to Stelma Cia Nav, Panama renamed Eleonora,
1986 scrapped.

In modern maritime usage, "tonnage" specifically refers to a calculation of the volume or cargo volume of a ship.

I remember that boat at Longleat from a trip there in the 60's and have some home movie footage, now on DVD of it. No idea how to post it here though. I also remember from that same day making such a fuss about needing a slash that my Dad let me get out of the car for a tinkle. In the middle of the lion enclosure!

If you put it on YouTube you can then quote the link in a forum post.
