Just picked up an interesting announcement from the DVLA. It would seem all vehicles that are tax exempt, Historic Class, and will become so in a planned rolling rule, can display black and white number plates, and not white/yellow black as now. This will make it easier to differentiate these vehicles by the authorities; I am not usually a 'I wonder what the scheme is behind this' person, but I wonder............

Its not mandatory though and quite obvious if they are historic

Anyway to be truly "original" post 72 cars should have reflectives. Wink

So long as it's can display rather than must display, I doubt there's too much to worry about. I can't see much point in a daytime driving only restriction IMO, my '64 Herald has better headlights than plenty of moderns (without doing anything fancy, just that they have proper lenses which seem to have gone out of fashion) and in any case there aren't enough coppers to enforce it - just like the mobile phone law Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Interesting announcement; I wonder whether DVLA have the authority to change a Construction and Use Regulation?

I think my Singer (1965) may have come new with reflective plates as I have some very early images (1966) of the car wearing the plates it came with when I purchased it.

Reflective plates were introduced from about 1965, and caught on quickly as they looked modern. Certainly by 1969/70 (G/H reg) very few dealers were still fitting black plates.

Here in Malta we will have to change the plates too, they'll still look the same but the letters and numbers will be a different colour, instead of black, they'll be an ugly shade of reflective green, on a white background!
I've seen some already and they look awful!
It has been mentioned that its all part of an eu law that historic cars must have different plates to differentiate them from the normal cars!
I hope its not going to fire off something else. Only use on weekends and so on.

I'll believe in this referendum when it actually happens. Even then, do you trust them not to fiddle the result?

If the wrong answer is the result they will do what they did in IRELAND and hold another referendum until the right answer comes up

Hi guys!!
As mentioned in my earlier post, yesterday this was mentioned as being fact in the budget 2016, vehicles listed as classics which pay just the 8 euro road tax per year will be use only in wkends and public holidays!!!
I am contemplating reverting them back to normal road tax and be able to use them whenever I like!!!
Even if that means paying over the odds for cars I rarely use!!
This is a problem for me as you have to go in the wkends for the VRT (MOT) and whatever you need doing like tyres, exhaust systems, maybe take it to a mechanic or body repairer etc etc!!

If they try those kind of antics here, they had better be prepared for a demonstration of civil disobedience!
