Hi

Thanks for posting the pictures Rick, and just to let everyone else know I am not the one in the picture, that is another Dave!

Yeah I have no PM's, am I ment to have one?

Another day of Penny Farthing Manufacture! The rim in the picture is actually the jig that I have used to bend the actual rim around. I have now done this and have completed one ond of the spokes that involves welding a bolt on to each one, I was going to cut a thread on them but didn't have the right dye!

I also welded 30 m6 nuts onto the spindle and spent about an hour burning my fingers. It all needs cleaning up and some holes drilling in the rim for the spokes, then heads hammering onto each spoke.

Then there are a whole list of other stuff to do like the forks, back bone, saddle, handle bar and the tyre but I will let you know about that when I do it!

I already have plans to do a mk2 version that is going to be a little bit special, a much bigger wheel and a slightly different layout! The mk1 wheel is 47" diameter.

Cheers and will keep you posted

Dave

Hi BB

I might have an old leather saddle somewhere if you need one?! or do penny farthings have something different to later bikes?

That would be good, Penny Farthings did have leather seats so that could be a finishing touch. The orriginals were quite long as to enable you to sit forward to get maximum power over the pedals when going up hills or racing etc. and to sit at the back of the saddle when going down hill to minimise the risks of tipping over the handlebars.

I will let you know when I get on to that stage, I am going to try and make a sort of leaf spring set up under the saddle to absorb some of the bumps!

Ok I'll have to dig it out and remind myself of the shape (!), I like the idea of a leaf sprung mounting, should make for a comfy ride. I thought I recognised blacksmith Dave, modelling the PF so far Very Happy

is he going to wander into this conversation at some point???

Rick.

Ok, I feel really silly now!! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

First picture shows the wheel rim being bent and clamped before being welded.

Second picture shows me messing with the spindle.

Third picture shows me being my usual self, really daft!

Forth picture shows the pedal and spindle arangement.

More PF making planned tomorow, and then I have to start looking for period dress for my maiden ride, full twwed and plus twos are required!

Cheers

Drilled the rim and cut the spokes to the correct length, at least I hope they are the correct length!! Very Happy

Might have the front wheel done today, then I reckon it should be finished in a couple of weeks. The only other thing that needs to be done then is I have to learn to ride it!

Cheers

Well, I have an idea that I am having some tapered tube, thick at the top getting thinner toward the rear wheel, It won't be actual tapered more flatened so it looks tapered from the side. This should help wit the asthetics. Simmilar thing for the front forks.

I have finished the front wheel today bar tensioning the spokes to pull it round, but that has to be dome when in the forks! It is unbelievably ridgid with all of the spokes in situe and they aren't even under tension yet!

Shouldn't be too long to go now, I have dne the hardest bit! Very Happy

More pictures shortly

Cheers
