Over the years I have come across some cars for sale which, looking back, I regret not buying.
Two years ago, an Austin Atlantic convertible for 4500 pounds. Partly dismantled, body was restored and engine overhauled, needed new trim and chrome but was complete and had a new convertible top. Very rare LHD.
An AC 2-Litre Saloon for 3200 pounds five years ago. In good condition, paint needed attention but good mechanics and interior.
A Jensen C-V8. I actually went to have a look at this six years ago. For sale at 3300, drivable but needed paint and had rust on the floor pans.
Longer ago, 12 years, a Jensen FF Mk1 in sad condition but only 3000 pounds.
Only six months ago, a 1977 Lotus Elite in good drivable condition. Had been standing for 8 years, sold for 800 pounds. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

If only I had a three thousand pounds to spare in January 1970

It doesn't sound like a lot of money today but you could have bought 2 brand new Volvo 144S cars for almost the same money

Ok.... but that was a very long time ago. What do you regret missing out in the last 10 years or so? _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

A very early (lights in the radiator panel) 6 cylinder Land Rover Series 2a 109" hard top only five years ago.
A 1968 (G) registration, in Limestone with overdrive and only 48k miles and two owners from new. It needed a new chassis not from overwork but because it had stood outside most of it's life.
I dithered and lost. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

I rented a flat, actually a third of an old house with the landlord and landlady living in another third. This was in 1965. I had been there a month when the landlady found out about my interest in early cars. "Oh," she said, "We have a Hurtu in the shed."
Unfortunately arrangements had been made to sell it just one week earlier.
When rolled out of the shed, one tyre needed replacing, and there was a small leak in the radiator, but the engine fired up and it was driven away.
Here is the car being prepared-
After restoration-

Half way through my apprenticeship I had saved enough money to get myself a car that was not a family cast off. A workmate was selling his M type MG and I wanted this so much that my teeth ached. I still cannot believe that I let a family friend talk me into passing this one by and buying a side valve Ford!
Regrets have been with me for over 50 years.
There is a happier postscript to this story however. My youngest son wanted a Chrysler Charger so badly. I was talking him into buying a "sensible" car for work. He listened to me but I saw the excitement die in his eyes. After a couple of weeks I thought about the "sensible" heap I had been persuaded to buy back in the sixties and realised how unfair I was. The next Saturday he and I found him a gorgeous Charger that he enjoyed for a number of years until his family started growing. So at least some good came out of my regret!

The yard from where I exhumed my 1950 Commer had many more lurking inside. I regret not having the money to buy a second at the time, I had space on the low-loader to bring it home and they were all very early QX models. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
