Who has Pops Ups at the bottom of OCC Pages ?

Just like Taxes, and Simon Cowell, they are part of life.

This one however did get my attention.

Is Rick branching out into an OCC Matchmaking Forum ?

We will all get adds, but different ones....in theory ( but not allways!) they should be targeted to the user, it's call " behavioural targeting" more here:

I've installed no pop-ups on the forum, all the page should display (unless there's something going on with your browser/PC) is an adsense (Google) advert box near the bottom of the page. Sometimes the automated targeting can leave something to be desired, but no pop-ups AFAIK.

OCC matchmaking service - there could be something in that.

I use Firefox with Adblock plus and don't see any of these.

On a forum I once moderated, one contributor complained about adverts that kept appearing for Russian wives. After I explained that they were targeted depending on his Googe search habits I never heard from him again...

But if everyone did this, many sites would simply become uneconomic to run and pack up.

When I started this thread, it was a little tongue in cheek because I know that in the main adverts are targeted towards those who may have a specific interest.

I hear a lot from folk who complain that their computer is slow or bogged down, but perhaps never realise that "you are what you surf".

Rick made a valid point and one that has been raised in high places (free web high places) the man on the London Omnibus can receive a wealth of knowledge from the internet for something between zero cost and very little. It has become expected of many that this free information will be there for eternity, only time will tell.

We pay more money for our television than we do for the internet and we get to see programs that if it were not for advertising, just would not be there.

OCC members can enjoy a wide range of pleasure for zero outlay. What if anything would OCC members wish to pay per year for something that is currently free.

OK, so adverts may be annoying, they may not always seem relative (which started this thread) and I know that I could put advert blocking on my computer............ but is there a chance that if everyone who had a computer were to use advert blocking all we would end up with is 100% of an internet with zero content ?

It is possible to tailor these adds; click on the cross (close) box in the top right hand corner, and then follow the link to add preferences. Google then allows you to edit your own preferences by deselecting topics and adding new ones.

This us benificial to the user and the advertiser, as its no good them trying to promote a Russian bride when all you really want is a box of No 4 1/2" , countersunk slotted wood screws.

Of course. I use Adblocker because I found the problem was the way ads are presented. I found them distracting (of course!) and that it could be quite difficult to get rid of them and continue doing what I wanted to do.

So I installed Adblocker. If a site was really good and useful I would consider removing it. But it does seem that many sites I visit are actually losing their attraction as so many contributors have moved on to "social media". But then a similar thing happened with newspapers. It is another aspect of evolution perhaps.

Slightly off topic I have often wondered whether people do not end up paying twice for some media such as TV. They buy a package but then still end up with ads..... Is this an economic necessity or simply a good earner for the companies?

Dipster makes a valid point about the intrusion of adverts on many sites.

OCC excepted.

After some years with Photobucket, I am about to kick them into touch, but will maintain my membership so as not to lose the many photos I have posted on various sites.
