I've sold surplus clutter on perhaps two or three occasions in the 1990s at autojumbles, prompted by a desire to de-clutter rather than make any significant £.
This was at Capesthorne Hall in 1999, our stall being ably guarded by our faithful hound Olly (RIP).
Have you sold stuff at autojumbles? Or do you just buy, like I normally do. In fact I've not been to a good a/j for a while now, I must see what's coming up.

I generally just buy stuff, I have resolved not to sell anything until I've finished putting the project back together in case I sell something I needed.
I keep seeing stuff about an autojumble in Coventry (Ricoh Arena) next weekend but I don't know how good it is. After that there's the one at Race Retro (which is more sport-oriented) and then the Practical Classics Restoration Show, all before the proper outdoor season starts. |

Over the years I've done hundreds of autojumbles, car boots and sunday markets. Here's a picture of one where we cleared out stuff on moving with my old mate George only a few days before he died.
Oddly selling tools wasn't really worthwhile at any of these events,I used to take boxes full of whitworth,AF and BA tools all brand new and at the end I'd be packing them away again. In the finish I stopped taking any, people would buy secondhand but didn't want to know about new stuff. Even today on the net I find the quality tools go abroad far more than here. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

Over the years in order to finance projects I have done a few autojumbles, did Beaulieu for 2-3 years but it got so expensive it wasn't worthwhile. Even now our local car show is £65 for a 3 x 3 metre plot. When you take in fuel and food etc you don't make much back. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Father used to have a stall, started autojumbling in the mid 70's before I was even thought of, mainly at steam rallies. Starting I think at the Lancashire Traction engine Club doo at Burtonwood.
As I grew up in the 80's and 90's we went out almost every weekend in the summer, and when we were not we were buying stock, or chasing bits and vehicles to sell. Father mainly dealed in rusty stuff, rather than the shiny stuff
We used to do a lot of the steam rallies, but also the likes of the Tatton Park, the VSCC meet at Olton Park (the best moneywise and for stuff for us kids to do), and Beaulieu etc.
Fathers interest was mainly pre war, as is mine to be honest. Mid 1990's the market for pre war gear seemed to drop like a stone, the top end stuff still sold, but no-one wanted a spare wheel for a Morris 8, he wasn't into the post war stuff so he stopped going regularly.
We still have a table at some of the shows we go to, and dabble. But nowadays we mainly place the stuff we find.
Just reading this, I realised I have an electronic photo of the stall, I think probably taken at a early 90's Bishops Castle Steam Rally

I sold a few things as well at car shows but they are getting less now. Why pay to put up a stall when you have a much larger market on ebay. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

On a practical and commercial level I agree, eBay is a no brainier, but it's just not the same as getting your hands dirty rummaging through a box of bits!

If you have easily-identifiable, make- or model-specific stuff, or branded NOS items (eg Lucas), then ebay is the best option. But if you just have boxes of junk to rummage through, a proper a/j is the way to sell it off IMO.

I've sold lots of stuff through eBay.
Worryingly, the last 3 payments received through PayPal have been frozen by PayPal for no real reason, I currently have £500 sitting in their account that is unavailable to draw on until Jan 31st, this is despite a 100% feedback and sending all the items out by recorded delivery with tracking numbers etc.
Now, as they cannot give me a decent reason for withholding monies (except it's our new policy!) and being slightly cynical, imagine the extra interest they would make if they invented issues with even 10% of customers and withholding monies for a week or two.
At least with car boots, auto jumbles etc it's cash on the nail.

Never done but often bought and still. Sometimes sell through Ebay but that seems a lot of hassle.
I have loads of stuff but perhaps when I think I will no longer be able to use it and when I have fully retired perhaps
Seems too much now tosort it and pack it into a Landy + trailer and then unpack the unsold stuff _________________ Rover P2

I had an auto jumble stall at Dorking and tried selling Morris 8 parts. I hadn't allowed for the fact that the heavy items including engines, gear boxes and axles would fail to sell but small items that could be carried away in pockets and bags would. The end result was that I gave it all away to the Morris 8 club spares guy. I made some money from the stall but it wasn't enough to be worth spending my weekend haggling! |

I took a load down to the city swap meet a few years ago and sold quite a lot but like Ray took a lot of heavier stuff home, but some of the heavy stuff was sold privately after the swapmeet because it was seen by friends of someone who needed it and after getting details for their mate I was contacted by the interested party. I also made a couple of good friends at that meet and I still talk to them every time I see them, you can't do that on E'Bay.
Its funny, I travelled over 100 miles to get to the meet because I was living in the country at the time and as they start them so early even leaving at 4.30 AM I was still one of the last sellers to arrive. Most of the buyers had all walked around at least once before I pulled in and when I arrived in a fully loaded ute and trailer the fact that there was fresh stock was apparent because I got swamped by the buyers for about 15 minutes before it quietened down a little, they literally were running over to have a look before anything they might want went.
I only did it the once but I should really get my act together and do it again ! |

I much prefer autojumbles as you get to talk to people. Ebay is another matter, I am selling stuff on there now and am having trouble taking payments through paypal. Not my fault at all but it is very discouraging. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
