I wonder how many locomotives have 'toured' as far as this one. USA and Canada in the '20's, and later in the late '60's and early '70's, Australia 1989, and possibly other countries.
While in Oz it set the record for the longest non-stop run of a steam loco, ever, on the 8th August 1989, with a run of 422 miles between Parkes and Broken
Hill in New South Wales.
The loco in the Daily Mail story bears the number 60103. I had always accepted the number as being 4472. What happened?

I can remember asking about that when I visited the museum a few years ago. I think the answer was that 60103 was the number allocated to it either in wartime or possibly when LNER gaveway to British Railways. I assume that after renovation it will return to green livery and 4472.

Thanks Peter, that makes sense. It wore the 4472 number when in Australia.
Interestingly the locomotive in the Daily Mail B & W clip is 4476. There were several of these locos but not sure how many. The number 4 comes to mind.
Late in 1949 my family rode a train to Scotland. As an inquisitive nearly five year old, I walked from carriage to carriage until eventually I came to a door that would no open, even though I could see the corridor connection beyond. As I turned, I saw two men in railway uniform in the front compartment of that carriage.
Another event on that journey was when I heard a strange noise and could see a spray of water outside the carriage.
It was a few years later, when I learned more about British railways did I realise that I had been traveling behind one of the 'Scotsman' locomotives, that the locked door was to connect to the locomotive's tender, the uniformed men were the relief crew, and the spray was as we picked up water on the run.
We were heading for Scotland to join the ship that brought us to Australia. I had my fifth birthday somewhere in the Indian Ocean, and one of my gifts was a copy of the Reverend Audrey's book 'James the Red Engine', which I still have and cherish.

Hi Dane,
Great times! I was a real fan of the Rev. W. Audrey's books too. Especially their 1930s setting, the fat controller with top hat and all. Yes, I was obsessed with that decade from my earliest years.

Don't confuse the locomotive named Flying Scotsman of which there was and still is only one and the the Flying Scotsman express service that was a named train from Kings Cross to Scotland. The train would be puled by whichever A3 class or A4 class loco the shed provided. There were numerous A3s something like 80+ do a wiki A3 Class Loco and you will find a list of them all together with their names.

Following the cancellation of Scotsman's run from Bury to Carnforth and back, yesterday and today, it has been withdrawn from the initial "2016 Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express" Manchester-Carlisle-Manchester this coming Saturday; now to be headed by LMS 5MTs 44871 and 45407.

The brake problem was fixed on Tuesday, a few days before the mainline run on saturday, but it needed to be tested in between and there wasn't enough time to get the paperwork through unfortunately  Most annoying for us folk who have spent thousands of hours to get it where it is today but it has come a long way especially when you consider that this time last year we were welding on the new front frame sections... |

Nice 3 min. piece here on the BBC website about it's mainline run at the weekend. Looks slightly odd in Austerity black and BR smoke deflectors but I'm sure no one cared on the day!

Hi
Did you notice the numbers?
It's carrying 60103 on the smokebox with of course 103 on the LH side of the cab, but there is 502 on the RH side.
I must say the whistle sounds a bit thin and reedy, I noticed that at Preston on it's way to Carnforth and again last Thursday when it paused in Blackburn on it's final, loaded, proving run.
