No matter which channel you turn to, "ordinary" or satellite channels there's one or more food or cookery programmes on somewhere.

I enjoy my food, perhaps a little too much but even I can only eat what I recognise.
Looking at some of the concoctions dished up on some shows I cannot but admire the courage or "taste" of the diners. Not for me though.

Anybody agree?

Yep, plus I can't stand how all these cooks are now "celebrities" and somehow are deemed interesting to have on chat shows etc etc (not that I partake in them either tbh).

Surely, food is all about the taste and smell? not just how it looks on the telly. I suppose these programmes may inspire people to be more daring in the kitchen, but there's too much of it on TV IMO.

The same can be said for house-buying and antique-valuing programmes also Smile

The biggest trouble is that they just make me hungry. I briefly watched a series on the food channel (up in the forties on Freeview I think) called "America's Best Sandwich" and some of the stuff on there looked great, if a little messy to eat, and just made me more disappointed that even the fancy sandwich shops that are around now don't do anything that special, or not in this area at least. When I first started working in my previous office, it was great because there was a new sandwich shop that had a great selection. Fast-forward three years, though, and the range was identical, as if whoever thought up the combinations had disappeared. It's a pity that it's down to an American franchise (Subway) now to provide interesting sandwich options.

I suppose one of the talents of a presenter of a cookery show, whether it's bake-off, or Masterchef or whatever, is to try to get across to the viewers how something tastes or smells, quite difficult to do effectively I would think. I'd just be there saying "that's nice" or "uurgh", which wouldn't engage the viewer.

The trouble is, these things are cheap to make, and easy to repeat because there's no storyline for anyone to remember, so it's an easy way to fill the schedules, and the advertisers are happy because they don't have to analyse the viewer profiles so much.

The cookery, property and antique shows I can take or leave. What really gets my goat is the ridiculous amount of sport that's being shown seemingly 24/7. It would be bad enough if it was just the boring f*otball, but considering we also have wall to wall coverage of what seems like every sport ever invented it's just too much - and the even more boring olympics haven't even started yet Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Cookery programs I can take or leave, but if I could only have a TV for one thing it would be sport. I even found a strained Welsh connection last night to support Wales in the semi finals Smile

Yes! I find it a bit like modern art - "King's new clothes" comes to mind!

It may be unusual for someone living in the west of Scotland but I cannot abide televised sport. I do accept however, that I am in a minority and that many folk love it.
Over the past year I have become increasingly annoyed by the poor standard of TV. The shows are shallow and the endless adverts make even the odd interesting programme an ordeal. I will not dwell on Jeremy Kyle other than to say that never was the bottom of a barrel so well scraped.
When my licence fell due for renewal I decided to vote with my feet and dispense with my television. This resulted in a flurry of letters from the Licence folk who seemed to find it difficult to believe that anyone can live without TV.

Why pick on cookery programs? I got shot of our TV about 25 years ago, and from what little I see of it now, it was the best thing I ever did! (except marry my wife, according to her)

It just took me so much longer to realise that it was rubbish. Thank God for Radio 4.
