I have a rusty old 1960s Mobylette, its almost complete and we would like too get it running but leave the rusty patina so how should I treat it?

I used to have the same model.
It should be possible to lose the red rusty look, then I'd either go over it with a lightly-oiled rag (although your clothes might not like that option) or else a proper wax in a tin - not the paste stuff. Some also use linseed oil.
One trick I was given to lose the red rustiness, was to go over the paintwork with one of those two-sided pan scrubs, with a 50% mix of water and bleach. Obviously try a small area first, but it tends to turn the rusty bits grey which looks better (IMO), before waxing or oily-ragging. Sometimes using a polish over the affected areas, such as Mer, has the same effect.

Some have used Owatrol to protect a rusty/ patinated vehicle, It's intended for use on garden furniture.
.
The rust absorbs it and it dries to a matt finish |

Thanks for your help, after a lot of thought we have decided to sell it as we just have too many unfinished projects _________________ It will come in handy even if you never use it. |
