Popped along for the afternoon as the weather had taken a turn for the better. I did spend most of the time in the autojumble but a few interesting vehicles caught my eye.

I thought that last one was unusual as well - it comes up as an ERF, fuel type Steam. But it looks far too modern to be an original ERF steam truck, if they even made them.

Thats because its home made!.

The rolling chassis is a 1970's ERF Lorry. dont know exactly what, I'd guess a LV chinese six tractor unit. Minus the diesel engine and bodywork.

Then the motive power is a boiler and engine out of a Sentinel shunting locomotive. The boiler in the front, the engine over the back axle. This drives forward to a 4x step up gearbox where the diesel engine used to be, in turn it drives a david brown 6 speed box and a 2 speed eaton rear axle.

Bodywork is ply and tin, theres a whole lot of nothing inside.

Apparently it will cruise at or near the lorry speed limit all day long.

I was parked next to it with my steamer.

It is certainly an interesting engineering exercise, but it is all rather lost on the punters, who really have no idea. Some of them remember 'ones just like it' (presumably from when they were taking LSD in the 1960's). One gent spoke to me how it was just like the mobile fish and chip shop that used to come to his village when he was a boy. It all seemed a bit of a fraud to me.

To be fair to the owner and his crew who are all nice people, there is a info board telling exactly what it is, its just no one bothered to read it!.

But each to his own.

I'm guilty of that, but then I spent most of the time in the autojumble, and just happened to walk past the steamers as they were gathering to go into the arena, so I imagine the board was out of the way by then. I guess those who saw one "Just like it" are probably just being generic - it does look very like the mobile library that used to come around here until recently, from the outside.

Its boiler was life expired so the Nuffield engine was fitted to extend its life. Thats how it has been preserved
