EARLY ENTRIES REVEALED FOR LANCASTER INSURANCE PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP AT BIRMINGHAM’S NEC.
The first five entries to be confirmed in the Lancaster Insurance Pride of Ownership display have been revealed. Held as part of the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th November, the overall winner will be decided by visitors to the season finale.
Richard Morley, Operations Director at Lancaster Insurance, said: “We’re proud to be supporting an area which champions people showcasing their pride and joy and the story behind it. These five are indicative of the quality of the entries we’ve received and we’ve got some tough decisions ahead, but I have no doubt that it will be an outstanding display.”
First to be confirmed is a 1973 Alpine Renault A110 owned by David Holden from Sheffield, which was previously been used as a show car until David realised he liked driving it more than showing it!
“After numerous shows, it occurred to me that the joy was in the driving rather than the polishing just for show, and so I took to the hills,” explains David. “I have now completed more than 30 hill climb and sprint events, often as a class winner against more modern cars. I drive it to and from every event as well. It’s a fantastic little car.”
Next up is a rare 1976 Citroen Ami Super owned by Neil Osborn from Peterborough. This striking example in the original Bleu de Petrel colour was one of the last produced between 1973 and 76, and purchased by Neil in 1984 with just under 35,000 miles on the clock but in need of a restoration.
“It only had two weeks left on the MoT,” Neil explains. “But no sills forward of the B pillars, which were folding in on themselves, and no floor forward of the driver’s seat. The inner wings had rotted and the rear bumpstops weren’t looking good. However, the chassis was perfect and it was completely sound in the front bulkhead and roof so I decided to make a ‘Super Dyane’ out of it but on dismantling it, the car proved too good to throw away so I rebuilt it over two years. Now, 32 years and several restorations later, my wife and I agree this will be the last car we ever sell.”
Paul Riley’s 1986 Audi Quattro takes the third spot, a car he yearned for since he was a child. Paul bought the car in 2006 from an owner who had it in his collection as an ornament. “The previous owner never drove it, even though it was his pride and joy,” Paul adds. “But that’s not what I’m about – I wanted it to be my fun car, so when I burned a piston out I stripped it and rebuilt it from top to bottom to get it how I wanted it.”
The colour scheme is unique – Paul’s car was Mars Red, but having grown up watching rally Quattros he’s emulated the look with a factory spec stripe kit. “Dad and I both used to go and watch the Lombard rally, that’s where it all comes from.” Sadly, Paul’s father passed away earlier this year so he has entered in memory of their shared love of motoring.
The fourth vehicle to be added to the line-up is a spectacular 1935 Auburn Speedster, one of just 143 produced, belonging to Roger Learmonth from East Sussex. This model spent most of its years in the Philippines before being shipped to the UK for restoration in 1986. A brief stint in the USA was part of its history before returning to Britain for a second resto in 2011. With 17,000 miles on the clock, Roger has made contact with all seven owners to retain the vehicle’s provenance.
Finally, the fifth car included in the display is the winner from the show’s sister event held in the spring. Barnsley’s Stuart Turp and his 1969 Ford Capri 1600 GTX LR were crowned the winners by visitors to the Practical Classics Restoration and Classic Car Show, and as part of his prize, he gets to defend his title in November.
The display will see 15-20 classics included. _________________ Rick - Admin

MEGUIAR’S CLUB SHOWCASE GATHERS BRITAIN’S BEST FOR NEC FINAL.
The very best classic cars from across the country, as nominated by classic car clubs in the UK, are set for a final face-off in the Meguiar’s Club Showcase at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 11-13 November.
The 16 cars have been selected by winning top honours at their Club’s national events and cover an incredibly diverse range of cars, with a combined value of over £500,000.
The finalists include British favourites from the likes of Mini, Jaguar and MG, alongside Volkswagen’s icon Beetle and world-beating Golf.
The Mini comes courtesy of Andy Nash, whose Traveller won ‘Best of Show’ with the National Mini Club. Fans of V8 engines will be drawn to Howard Guiney’s MGB V8 that won the Concours d’Elegance at the MG Car Club’s MGLive! event at Silverstone this year.
Away from members of the BMC/BL family, Ford are well represented with two cars sporting the blue oval making it into the final, with Geoff Cousin’s Ford Anglia and Gary Robert’s 3.0 Capri in the running alongside it. Geoff’s Anglia took the title ‘Best of Britain’ at this year’s Hot Rod and Custom Show, while Gary’s Capri is the Gold Winner with Capri Owner’s Club.
They will be joined by a Porsche 911 and Mercedes Benz, with a SAAB 96 representing the SAAB Owners Club. Flying the flag for the USA is a Chevrolet Pick Up, having been selected by American Auto Club International.
“Once again we’ve got an amazing selection of cars from the biggest and best Club events from across the UK” said Tom Clarke from Meguiar’s UK. “The standard of the cars we’ve got coming is going to make choosing the overall winner a difficult task.”
The cars will be judged over the three days of the show with TV’s Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer revealing the winner on Sunday, 13th November. _________________ Rick - Admin

LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW CELEBRATES
THE ULTIMATE MOTORING HERO – AYRTON SENNA
The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show will pay tribute to the ultimate motoring hero, legendary racing driver Ayrton Senna. As part of the show’s Heroes and Heroine’s theme, Senna’s Lotus 98T will be on display at Birmingham’s NEC from 11-13 November.
No one will ever forget Senna’s achievements, from his first home victory in São Paulo, in 1991, to Donington in 1993 when he overtook Schumacher, Wendlinger, Hill and Prost in just a minute and a half. The legacy of the driver once described as a ‘romantic, gladiatorial, complex virtuoso’ on Formula One is incalculable and his Lotus is a major part of his legend; in 1986 Senna put the Lotus on pole position eight times.
The 98T is also is the car that marked the end of an era in Formula One racing, being the last of the famous John Player Special cars and its EF15 Renault V6 engine marked the last of the unrestricted turbos. It has been painstakingly restored over two years by Dawn Treader Performance, who are delighted to honour the ultimate motoring hero for countless enthusiasts by putting the car on display.
Accompanying the 98T is Ayrton Senna Sempre, a portrait made entirely from pieces of denim jeans worn by the Senna family as the artist Ian Berry wished to intertwine the family into Ayrton’s image. This work was unveiled in Brazil on the 20th anniversary of his passing and the picture is owned by Ayrton’s mother. This homage to a driver who many regard as the ultimate in motoring heroes has been displayed around the world to raise awareness of the charitable foundation The Ayrton Senna Institute, which has provided opportunities for millions of children - http://www.institutoayrtonsenna.org.br/
A further celebration of Lotus’s contribution to motor sport is a Ford 400E Thames Van that has been carefully restored to create a replica of the company’s service van of the 1960s. Team Lotus used the Thames for towing their racing cars along Europe’s motorways and the 400E’s owner George Notman is ‘a long-time Lotus and Jim Cark fan’ who was ‘looking to do something different.’
George said: “I came across some images from Peter Darnley of the Lotus Racing Service livered Thames Van and thought I would have a go at recreating it.”
Any 400E is now extremely rare and George had to search for ‘two or three years’ before he found a suitable van could ‘set about stripping and restoring it’. The result is a vehicle that will evoke memories of so many Clark victories and one that is a tribute to George’s dedication.
The Heroes and Heroines display also stars the 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom II that won a richly deserved True Grit award at this year’s Peking to Paris Rally. The Phantom is owned by Hok Kiang Sia from Malaysia who described the Rally as ‘akin to climbing Mount Everest for the antique car racing world.’
The car caught fire on the first day in the Gobi Desert and Hok and Eric had to return to the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar but rather than admit defeat they worked on the Rolls Royce for five days before spending two weeks in catching up with the rally. They finally reunited with the other competitors in the Russian city Kazan and their car has come straight from the Paris finish line to the NEC; visitors will be able to see how its coachworks bears the scars of an epic journey of over 9,000 miles.
The Lotus, the Ford and the Rolls Royce all represent diverse forms of motoring heroism and their owners are proud to be a part of the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. The unique opportunity to see all three is one that should not be missed by visitors to the NEC. _________________ Rick - Admin
