Ok a few questions that arrived by email the other day, can anyone help out with information?

----

My name is xxxxxx and I represent the producers of an Irish television (RTE) series.

The series is set in Dublin in 1920 when Ireland was ruled by Great Britain.

Our transport dept have a number of British Army Crossley Tender Army vehicles and we were wondering if the vehicles would have been registered in the UK or in Ireland at that time?

We also have a scene where the American Ambassador arrives in a diplomatic car - would there have been a special diplomatic numberplate on his car? I presume his car would have been registered in London?

Would you be able to advise on what a diplomatic car registration plate would have looked like in 1920?

Any advice in relation to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

From this website most of the Crossleys in Ireland displayed letters 'NC' denoting Manchester where they were manufactured

Another has a Dublin plate 'IK'

I doubt that the Ambassador would have arrived in a 'diplomatic car' in 1920
(I don't think diplomatic plates were around until the 1970's)

If he arrived in a car more than likely he would have arrived in a local hired hackney car (called a limousine hire/taxi nowadays)

This vehicle would have the local Dublin Registration for 1920 using letters IK or RI

Dublin County Council
IK 1 to IK 99995 (Dec 1903 – Mar 1927);

Dublin City
RI 1 to RI 99996 (Dec 1903 – Apr 1921);

Thanks, I've pointed the enquirer to this thread, so they'll hopefully keep an eye on updates as they're added in here.
