|
|
Over the years there have been numerous quotes attributed to motoring personalities.
I'll start with a couple from Henry Ford:
"You can have any colour so long as it's Black" - I don't know whether Henry actually uttered this phrase, but it was certainly the production policy for a number of years when paint drying could not keep up with the pace of production; black was the quickest drying paint, and coincidentally also the cheapest!
"History is Bunk" - is a frequent miss-quote; Henry was actually referring to the manner in which history was taught rather than history itself, but that doesn't sound so good!
I have got several more quotes to follow, but I'll give you a chance to participate ... _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

While not particularly famous in the scheme of things, I've always quite liked the exchange with a seventies saloon car racer in a Gerry Marshall-related video I've got:
Film-maker: So why's that Vauxhall so quick, then?
Racer with large sideburns: Well, it's got the biggest driver!
I guess you had to be there. |

One I shall always remember was from Gwyndaf Evans' co-driver Howard Davies who, when asked how they had managed to be so quick on a particular stage in the very murky conditions of the RAC Rally, said "We had our fog tyres on..." _________________ David

Here's one I remember reading about many years ago :
Giles Villeneuve had crashed another Ferrari in practice and he wandered sheepishly back into the Ferrari pit to face an glowering Enzo Ferrari and said :
" Isn't it a pity that you're not the Pope, Signor Ferrari, then all I'd have to do would be to kiss your ring !"
Ferrari collapsed in laughter. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said "Parking Fine." ~Tommy Cooper |

I can't prove the authenticity of this one-
W.O. Bentley drove the new Type 35 at the Bugatti works. He remarked to Ettoire that the car was very good, but the brakes were poor. Bugatti retorted "I make cars to go, not to stop"! _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

Another Bentley/Bugatti quote: EB described the Bentleys as "the fastest lorries in Europe".
Henry Royce famously said " Whatever is rightly done, however humble,is noble". _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

I was at the Woodcote Chicane during a very wet Silverstone 6hr race in the late 1970s when the Porsche 935 driven by Jochen Mass slid off the track into the catch fencing a few feet away. I spoke enough German to understand what he was saying though I'd better not quote him here as I rather not be banned... _________________ David

In 2012 Sir Stirling Moss was at the Donington Historical Festival. A reporter for the Telegraph asked him about the fabled story....
"Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?" is the fabled traffic policeman's admonishment. Has anyone ever said that to the real thing?
"Yes a policeman did once ask me," says Moss, with a grin, "but I couldn't work out if he was taking the mick." |

A popular quote in the old days was
IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD A DODGE, THEN DODGE A FORD!
Unfortunately I don't know the originator.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
