That was the one of the late John Le Mesurier's comments on his professional and personal life.

Change those words slightly to "It's all rather nice isn't it?" and it describes rather well how it is to be a member of Old Classic Forum.

Of an evening I roam the Internet widely and I often see surly members of other forums, not motoring ones necessarily, flaming others during discussions or on contentious topics.
On one forum which I will not name there's an ongoing flaming war about how cars for sale should be described in on forum advertisements and no punches are being pulled.
I am fairly broad minded but entertaining such "trolling wars" may be, they are ultimately rather sad expressions of the often alter egos of keyboard warriors.

This must be one of the few forums without an "ignore" facility.
Everything here is discussed in a mature, gentlemanly and genteel way.

It is an example of how people can conduct themselves in the world of internet forums.

I like it here because we just rub along together, we even talk to one and other where on other forums people just post and never interact or on hi fi forums, they have the most vicious, ridiculous and protracted arguments.

The great joy of life is in the friends you make and the people you learn from and we get that here.

FWIW the TR Register is the same, just really nice friendly people

I have been in several forums, particularly genealogy and a Yorkshire one. I left for the reasons mentioned before and in other posts. In a word, "intolerance", rows broke out over the most mundane of things and there were always those who could never resist taking their own gallon of gasoline and keep dripping it on day after day.

I have never actually met another OCC forum member "in the flesh", [don't even go there ] but I admire and take an interest in what is being done and said. The written word can be a dangerous thing, because without inflection and visual contact a simple remark can sound out of place when if fact it is no more than a sarcastic comment or a bad attempt at a joke.

Many years ago I learnt to "sit on my hands" however we are fortunate to have someone who leads by example .

I think much is due to Rick's excellent moderation but there's no substitute for open, honest discussion on the part of the membership too.

Always the most civilised of debates to be found on here.
I must say that I do enjoy the 'message board' type of forums and it will be a great loss if they continue loosing out to the likes of Facebook, which I detest as approximating to the Devil's work!

What I like about this forum is that our different views are given a fair hearing without recourse to rancour.

On a different forum I have had the misfortune to be targeted by a troll. I always thought if I did receive such horrible private messages I would be mature enough to shrug it off but the troll had used such a pleasant, matey approach on the forum, I had been drawn in without my realising it.

When the attack came it was out of the blue. The essence of the message was to accuse me of giving bad advice and to ridicule me for a couple of errors I had made. He must have guessed that the last thing I would want to do is give anyone bad advice and that it would hurt me to think I had. I was so taken aback by the change in the way this guy was writing, I had a sudden surge in my blood pressure and was taken ill. It took several days for me to get back to normal. I have learned from the experience, though.

The troll still posts in his personable way but now I don't respond and have filtered out any further messages he may try sending me. I have subsequently learned that he has done this to other forum contributors but he has been careful not to break any forum rules.

I come here for a little bit of sanity and calm in a turbulent internet world. Though my mechanical skills are limited compared with other regulars here and age and infirmity are conspiring against me, I enjoy reading all technical posts as much as I enjoy the historical facts and photographs which are my particular interest.

Im a great believer in the " I might not agree with your point of view but will defend your right to have it" principle.So many people seem unable to disagree without becoming insulting,happily it seems this forum and its memebers rise above that.
