Just a question really, do any of you turn the engine over on your old cars during winter layup?
I have a battery conditioner linked up into the singer but occasionally I give the motor a quick turnover, not enough to fire her up, more to move the oil about a little.
I've always done this with all my old cars and bikes with no apparent detrimental effects.
What's your thoughts?

I don't see why not, I kick over the Velo from time to time to achieve the same effect.

I try and run my oldies up from time to time, but only if I can let them run for a good while to fully warm them through, say 15-20 minutes, not just a few minutes. I usually set the idle to 1500+ rpm and exercise everything, brakes, clutch etc. and leave the bonnet up while running. If nothing else it drives away condensation that tends to form on the cold engine blocks, and sometimes on the underside of the bonnet.

About once a month I start my old car and run it until the temperature gauge is higher than normal hot running temperature. (I cover the radiator for a quicker warm-up.)

When hot I put it into gear and slip the clutch to avoid corrosion sticking the driven plate to the flywheel. (I find it is often stuck after inactivity.)

I know I've only had my car a short time so still a bit of a novelty but I took it out last week and will take it to the workshop this week to get the rust problem assessed. But all the time it's road worthy and it's dry I will drive it occasionally. My motor home sits outside the garage and mostly moves about 2 metres when I want to open the doors and the brakes bind on and now I've left it in gear with the handbrake off the brakes are still binding.

Hi Peter,

I don't think I need to ask if they salt the roads around your area!

I try to give mine a run of 5 to 10 miles every 2 or 3 weeks unless it raining or snow, then I run the engine for about 15 to 20 minutes at a fast idle.
