|
|
Being a nosy parker and quite proud of the average annual mileage of over 5000 that I do in my little Fiat 500, I was intrigued to look up two of the classic 500s that I used to own.
One of them has done 75 miles in 6 years and the other almost 1000 miles in ten years.
For several years, both of them did only 2 or 3 miles and in one year one of them travelled zero miles!
I'm guessing that at least one of these cars is sitting in a motor dealer's showroom as a display item.
But personally, the car would be completely wasted if I didn't use it almost daily.
I am interested to hear from classic car owners who do mileages in the thousands per year; how many of us are there? |

Not sure about the actual mileages, around 10 K kilometers I would guess. But I cannot wait for the winter with its salty roads to be over, then its back to classics for the daily transport. The modern will not be used then by me unless there is a good reason. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

My two vintage cars would generally travel less than 1500 km per year. This year we have Rally West 2017 and as it is a week long hub rally based around Geraldton well to the north of Perth, I will probably end up with 4000 km plus on the Chrysler this year.
My Post vintage (1932 Austin Seven) would travel about 1000-1500 km.
The classic (1950 Austin) would probably only travel 3000-4000 km a year.

Its weird being the same age as old people.

I'm not overly certain how much mileage I do in my Dellow?
[I really really really must make an effort to log it!!]
I take it out as often as I can, given the task to be done, so to speak.
I take it shopping, which is ok, as long as no-one asks for a lift!
I don't worry about salt or mud, it was built originally to cope with that sort of thing. [The chassis is stout, well-blathered tube of the highest quality, courtesy of the WW2 armaments industry..the body is ally]....have to be a bit careful where I park it, as we all do?
If it's tipping it down, I may think twice..but on long trips, I don't worry too much about rain or stuff. Wind is an issue [isn't it always?].....it's prone to being blown all over the place....but, having spent 25 years of my working life, driving double deck buses across the countryside, coping with gusty sidewinds is old hat for me....
It's been on holiday [as well as trials]....accompanying chums on tier motorcycles...it's quite close to being like a bike anyway....and can certainly 'keep up' to an extent....especially on twisty roads...gotta keep the gas on all the time.
The 'other thing' in my collection is rather on the large side...too large for me to be comfortable parking in Tescos', for example......so get's less use..too pretty to risk, I suppose? |

Last year was the first that I hadn't been out in the Riley at least once every month throughout the year. In fact it only left the garage three times, once for its MOT and twice for charity drives, the second was in May so I hope it's still where I left it!
As I was gettiing over illness I don't feel too bad about not driving it much but this year we're planning to get as far as France and Scotland and also the Goodwood Revival. _________________ David

We only have classics - 7 of them which are now on limited mileage and business use + commuting for theoretical 18K miles a year which I have never done even with just 1 car.
We now do less than 8000 which includes our touring holiday every year to Ireland and 4 days commuting. Even when I worked 5 days it has been well under 10K for this century _________________ Rover P2

Compared to some of you, my two are almost "modern", but the Range Rover Classic LSE has done 16,000 in 18 months, and my 1986 Talbot campervan 4,000 since we bought it 7 months ago. Both are used daily, depending on what we're doing. |

Not my classic but my motor home bought new in 2001 and was used mainly to go to Spain several times has only done 16000 miles. Engine is almost run in. Since buying a house in France nine years ago we haven't used it much and some years it has only done 10 miles going for its mot and one year did 20 miles because it failed on the horn not working. |

I thought I was only doing about 4-500 miles a year in mine as I tend to only do relatively local shows in it, but looking at the MOT certificates it seems to be more like 12-1300. |

It used to be at least 5,000 in each, but now, with so many people regarding their cars as investments we are a much smaller user band and the mileage has dropped considerably to a maximum of 2,500 each. Next year though we are touring Scotland with the E-type, so count on several thousand in three weeks there. |

I keep trying to do more with mine, but I've been trying to finish off a rebuild of another car, so haven't really had the time. |

I did around 200 miles in my 47 Minx last year, my Commer lorry will be on the road this year but doing 10 to the gallon I don't think I will be doing many miles in her! _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

The Series 2a Land Rover used to do 2000 miles or so every year until I bought a daily use commercial vehicle.
These days it covers around 800 miles. _________________ Starting Handle Expert
