I think the person writing the log book for the '55 car had a language problem. I suspect the colour was ultra marine. The photo I found is not my impression of ultra marine but it is blue.

Not much to say about these two: they are both 1200cc de-luxe saloons, so they are both standard Beetles. The 1955 car would have the small oval rear window, the 1962 had a larger rear window. (ha! beaten by Peter!).
The 1962 car with the WRA registration may well have been supplied by Gordon Lamb in Chesterfield (they were the main dealers for Derbyshire and South Yorkshire). I believe the Derbyshire records have been destroyed, but it might be worth contacting Gordon Lamb to see if they still have their sales ledgers.

It looks like the stamp on the WRA document reads 'Greater London Council'.

Yes, but it's a continuation logbook, not the original!

Re VW SOE. Note the £9: 15 NP (New Pence) Road Tax for 4 months.

Decimalisation started in Feb 1971 and in the early days it was quite usual to suffix the amount with either "NP or New Pence".

I have to wonder what other secrets the partially displayed Log Books may hold. Is the secrecy necessary to prevent some kind of fraud ?

How about putting them all in one thread so us 'registration detectives' know where to look?

I guess someone might try and use the details, or the logbooks themselves, to create an id for an actual (currently un-registered) car at some point in the future. DVLA keeps a close eye on certain auction sites for logbooks being sold, which is why certain info is often blocked in the listing photos.

Having seen log books being offered for sale I queried with the DVLA whether it was legal to do so. Sellers should be very wary is my advice, whether they conceal details or not. I know that PistonHeads lists and reports such sales, quite rightly so in my opinion.

Thanks for the note Carl.

What I don't want happening is people joining up in future just to buy old logbooks, after spotting suitable documents popping up on here, as I can't judge whether their planned use is fair game or foul, and I want no part in (potentially) facilitating the misuse, or ringing, of vehicle IDs.

Therefore I'd prefer you not to post their details on here, thanks. I'm sorry if this will hinder you identifying certain vehicles.

I take your point re knives etc. but indirect advertising of expired logbooks isn't something that sits comfortably with me TBH, rightly or wrongly.

thanks
RJ
