Hi all,

A few moments ago, Cholmondeley announced a rename of their Pageant of Power, to Power and Speed. It'll be interesting to see what changes, if any, result following the name change.

Yes, I wonder why they did that. Perhaps it's just to make it a bit more obvious what goes on, rather than just applying a thesaurus to "Festival of Speed". The water-based activity seems to have dropped a bit over the last few years, and it will be interesting to see how last years events affect the air displays. Looking forward to it, though, being so close.

A couple of recent PRs for your delectation, curiously both received from email addresses still using the cpop domain name (there's no site yet assigned to cpas).

I'm still not quite sure why they changed the name Confused

It also seems like they're going out to woo modern car manufacturers, with the second of these two PRs.

-----

Cholmondeley Power and Speed – new name, reduced ticket prices
2016 sees Cholmondeley shaking things up with a new name, revised format and exciting features.

With a racetrack that rewards power and speed, we felt it was time for these key factors to be better represented in the event name and after much thought, Cholmondeley Power and Speed was born. The name was launched at London’s Hurlingham Club today.

This year, 10th to 12th June, sees the celebration of Supercars and Bikes: past, present and future. Taking to the track will be the likes of the McLaren 650s, Aston Martin Vulcan, Lamborghini Miura and ‘90’s Ducati superbike and the new Ariel bike.

With track action from 9am-6pm, air displays, army demos, trade village, hospitality and water sport action on the lake this is a weekend not to be missed. For those camping there will be a free evening beer and cider festival.

Book today for your early bird ticket price, free kids and free parking: just £24/adult. Gate price will be £40, kids £10. A whopping 20% discount on 2015 prices.

Hurry this offer is only until 1st March…..

-----

Cholmondeley has a proud history of asking its visitors to help to shape its events and this year we have an extra special innovation we'd love your feedback on: test drives.

For the first time, we are opening our world-class performance circuit to the general public, allowing visitors like you to experience the demanding 1.2 mile course for yourself.

Car manufacturers will be offering test drives at the event and so your feedback would be extremely useful. It will take around a minute to complete a questionnaire and to thank you, we will upgrade you to VIP parking. In addition there will be a draw for Helicopter and RIB Rides.

I'm quite looking forward to this again, though I could do with the time to work on the car. Fingers crossed for dry weather, though it'd be nice to be a bit cooler, for the cars sake as much as mine.

Reasonable day today - relatively small amounts of action on the track, with demo runs in the morning and practice in the afternoon. Some things we've seen before, and some we haven't.

As usual, more content today as the proper timed runs start. Rain stayed away until just after 3pm, though the damp track from last night slowed a lot of people down.

Ferrari FXX is normally kept and transported by Ferrari to track days and events, this one appears to have escaped.

Local product has a fair turn of speed when pushed.

I read just now that Cholmondeley Power and Speed isn't taking place this year, and their website seems to confirm it.

http://www.cpop.co.uk/

I'd have thought that regaining momentum after a year out would be a very tricky thing to do, IMO.

Oh, that's a pity, I do always enjoy the event with it being very local and so on. I know it has its detractors.

I did wonder what bright spark decided to throw away eight years of branding by changing the name from the Pageant of Power to "Power and Speed".

I do hope it comes back for next year. I was beginning to wonder whether something was going on, as the car club invitations hadn't yet been sent out and we usually have them by now.

Agreed the name change, perhaps to encompass events other than PoP (like the rally stage last year), seemed like an odd thing to do, yet sticking with the PoP website and email addresses - a bit muddled if you ask me.

Were Bentley still involved as of 2016? Support from some of the big guns that were in evidence early on, seems to have slipped a little in recent times I think. It needed freshening up. Personally I'd drop many of the side shows, really focus on the motorsport angle, halve the entry prices, cosy up to the clubs better, and see what happens.

No, Bentley had a small presence but it might have been a dealer. I got fed up of how many people I heard saying "Bentley have dropped out this year" when in fact they'd only ever signed up for the first 'x' years (which was up to 2015) so it wasn't a surprise. It was a pity they didn't renew their interest, of course.

I don't remember a rally stage there last year, whereabouts was that? A few years back we had the rally stage that was a straight line, round a few bales, round a tree and back, and they talked about improving it the next time around, but dropped it instead.

One of the things I hear against it is a lack of "names", with very few well-know racers visiting. Also the width of the track is a stumbling block when it comes to some of the historic vehicles - I remember talking to Joe Ward, owner of Baby Bertha the V8 Firenza, he told me he was basically doing display runs because if he went off, the trees are a bit unforgiving.

I meant rally as in the rally stage held at Cholm during the world rally championship last year, RallyFest I think it was called, whenever it was (not at the Pop/PAS).

ISTR Hall & Hall, and the Donington Collection, being major supporters not too long ago (in addition to Bentley). It was good when Sinsheim were involved with various exhibits too. Last time I went, one of the best displays IMO was by the classic scrambler/MotoX riders. Attracting fresh high-profile supporters seemed to be an issue.

It'd be a shame if it disappears for good. Events such as Chateau Impney, Sywell, and the revived Bo'ness meet show that new events can quickly gain traction, if focused and promoted well. Behind both though are committed enthusiasts, I'm not sure that Cholm has a team of dyed-in-the-wool petrolheads within their ranks? Grafters yes very likely, but ardent and passionate car people? That I'm less sure about tbh.

Ah, I see what you mean. I wondered how I'd managed to miss it.

I have heard some very disturbing things about some of the organising team in terms of their petrolhead credentials. A mate of mine has been on the team that helps organise the track entries, but only for the last couple of years, so I know he's been trying hard to improve that side of things. But some of the stuff I've heard from very early on in the history of the event is quite disturbing and I can only hope they've learned from it. I don't want to put it on a public site, I'll try to remember to mention it next time I see you.

It does remove a conflict of interest, though, as there's a VSCC thing on at Oulton on the Sunday that the event was scheduled for.
