Evening all,

Do you run/own the sole (as far as you know) example of a particular ancient vehicle(s) in your area, or are you one of a merry band of like-minded enthusiasts with similar cars in your motor houses, driveways etc?

I suppose it depends on how you define "local" (or "ancient", come to that) - nearest one like mine that I know of is near Preston. The car I'm working on started life slightly rarer (197 vs. 204 made) but there's another one in the Crewe area, also being worked on.

There is another sugga 50 miles from me and I'm guessing about 5-10 in the uk I've only seen 4 including mine. The trygge I think is the only one in the uk there is a later F83 down south. If anyone knows better let me know ,I am more than happy to meet or talk to other owners.

Parts are a pig to find( no pun sugga means sow in Swedish)

Mine is the only one round here, we have seen one other similar Minx at a show but the chap wasn't from the same county.

I think there are 8 other SS Jaguar 2½ litre all steel saloons in the UK and 24 in total world wide.

In spite of living in a rural area, I have a friend, just 2 miles away with one going Rover P4 and several parts cars. At about 6 miles away is another P4 owner.

My Packard 745 is the only one in my area - in fact I believe its the only one outside of the USA though I did hear a rumour that there is one in Spain.

The GB section of the Packard Club only has a couple of dozen members and most of those are in the South.

According to the Austin Swallow Register there are estimated to be some 87 surviving saloons (both early and later models) worldwide but I don't know of any others in Derbyshire.

Interestingly, "Trundles" was originally sold in 1930 by Gaunt's garage in Outram Street, Sutton in Ashfield - not very far from here - although it has moved around the country over the years.

Unsurprisingly, if I consider the Moggy then I know of quite a few around here.

There's a blue van, a grey Series 2 saloon that occasionally appears from a garage, a friend's pale green two-door, and dad's Traveller. A pale blue tourer often buzzes by here also. Until recently another friend also had a two-door saloon. Last week I ventured to a nearby paddock to inspect the remains of a c1961 two-door saloon, it would have taken some getting out plus I don't exactly *need* another, so I think it'll be staying where it is.

I currently only have the Mk1 Escort, a friend who live a male away has a very early 1967 Escort.
Across the road they own: 1 prewar Daimler saloon, 1 Daimler drop head, 1 MGB, 1 Capri.
Next door there lives a Toyota Celica Supra and a "baby mustang" Celica.
3 houses further up are 3 little Fergie tractors and a Trantor.

Within a 3/4 mile there are a Daimler Conquest, 100e Prefect, 2x TR6, a Spitfire, a classic Mini, a Mini Moke, an MGBRV8, a Standard Vanguard, an MGBGT, a Mercedes SL380, a 1930's Rover, a Moggy Traveller, and that's without thinking hard. There are a lot of petrol heads around me.

There are many old Land Rovers in my area, Series 1 ,2 ,2a and 3 but old Jaguars are rather thinner on the ground.

In the Conwy Valley there are two "E" types but the nearest Jaguar Mark 2 is a green 1961 3.4 litre on the North Wales coast. There may be others.
There is a one family owned from new 1967 Jaguar 420 about ten miles away.
It's a dark blue "E" registered manual which is in original condition but rarely seen or used these latter years.

In so far as rarities are concerned every classic car owner locally is overshadowed by the the existing classic car collection in the now closed to the public Betws y Coed Classic Car museum. The star of the exhibits was a a Type 57 Bugatti but where that is now stored is a closely guarded secret.

I know of only one Classic Range Rover in our valley, but that is a standard wheelbase one. My LSE is the only one in the area, but does not appear to be revered as a classic car! I did exhibit it once at a Classic show, and overheard someone say "Why is that old Range Rover in there?" I never showed it again!
Last time I checked, there were only a couple of hundred left in the UK.
So, this begs the age-old question, what is a "classic"?

I think a "classic" is whatever you think it is. The reason I say this is firstly, I couldn't give a fig what someone else thinks about my car ...and secondly; what is generally regarded as mundane today could quite possibly be highly regarded in the future.

It's all subjective anyway.

I dont know of that many classics in my area, only seen one vogue in the oswestry show a year or 2 ago.
I quite often go for a run up to the Britannia inn on the horseshoe pass in LLangollen if its sunny and watch the cars and bikes tramp pass.
Quite often there is a Vauxhall Viva up there, complete with roof rack and suit cases, looks quite the part and the driver is a nice bloke.
Apart from that, I dont know of any other cars but im sure there are a few.
