Hi, I’m seeking some information concerning car log books (vehicle log book – I think is correct). I believe that in the UK decades ago, owners were required to possess one for their vehicle, which transferred with a change of ownership, and they had to have a complete record of all repairs and/or modifications to the vehicle – could anyone confirm this? And what would be regarded as a modification, e.g. a replacement windscreen, wing…?

And secondly, does anyone know the years that they were used? I know they were current in the early sixties, but when was this practice revoked? The system has been re-introduced, so I’m interested in how the new system differs from the old.

I think the V5 replaced the old log book in the early 70s.

The log book needed to be updated if any of the details changed, be that vehicle or owner.

The usual things that changed in the vehicle details were colour and engine number although "Type of Body" may also have been changed occasionally.
General maintenance was not recorded unless it changed the engine number or the chassis or frame number.

What was recorded was the dates on which road tax was renewed so you could tell if the vehicle had been laid up off the road during its life.

Has anyone else noticed the number of V5 documents,Vin plates and even MOT certificates for sale on Ebay?. Some of the wording in the adverts implies that these can be used to give another car a 'new identity' and must be highly suspicious at least. I'm not going to give any links and give these free publicity,Ebay seem unconcerned but the DVLA took a very different view when I spoke to them.

Which is why I pulled those recent threads that were indirectly drawing attention to the availability of specific time-expired, but possibly re-usable, RF60 logbooks.

To be fair, the use of an old log book has since time immemorial been used to create replicas. My XKSS was built around the wreck of LHD E-type and my C-type around bits of a 1952 XK120. Otherwise one is looking at the IVA test which makes building a true FIA-papered replica impossible. This was for any replica, not just Jaguars and done in all innocence, but with today's inflated values I can see where misuse can be extremely profitable.
