I hope that I'm not informing the already well informed but a little research over the last few evenings has given me something of a surprise.
THe first production Mini, 621 AOK. proudly displayed at Gaydon is not, strictly speaking, original.
The car was registered and sold after being built and was bought back by BMC and "restored" to it's original state.

Here's a photo of the car, already well used and, er modified before being bought back :

The oldest surviving Mini is KEG 77 which was one of those hand built by Mr Albert Green and others in April 1959 to test production techniques. Mr Green was the Longbridge foreman.

The car now resides in a Japanese museum and was originally "restored" by by a then well known car enthusiast, David Worrow. He found the remains of the car in a hedge and rebuilt it with original parts he scoured the country for.
I saw a photo of the car as found in either Classic and Sportscar or Classic car in the late 80s or early 90s and there was not a lot left of the original bodyshell. Such was the extent of work that he felt justified in fitting a zero mileage speedometer.[/img]

It would be interesting to ponder and speculate how much of the original 621 AOK we see today.
What do you think?

The real mini has a huge fan base in Japan. Seeing one driving around Tokyo is not a rare sight.

When I was a nipper a chap who lived in our road claimed to have the fourth Mini (or Austin seven) ever built, which he was doing up. It was red and the reg. No. was 240 XMY. Dunno whether that was true or not!

This is a bit of a test post, I've never done this before...

Dave Warrow also owned an early E-type which he sold many years ago. His Mini was, as stated, proved to be older than the Mini 621 AOK and one of the funniest parts that BMC tried to hide that after AOK was restored the Webasto roof had disappeared! David sold off his cars in the 90s ad I don't think he is involved any more. I think he still has the original number plate for my car though!
