I drove my Bentley all over the UK and France over the years, in my opinion it's the only way to enjoy old cars. Last year my son and his wife did 2,400 miles around Europe in my Healey and are looking forward to doing it again soon. |

Holidays are much more fun in a classic, we've been to France, Scotland and to various parts of England in our Riley. Because we tend to avoid motorways we discover more interesting towns, villages and out of the way places and next year we're heading for France again. We'll probably celebrate my 70th in 2019 by driving from Land's End to John O'Groats by B-roads - just for the hell of it.
Camping? No thanks, after a day at the wheel a hot shower, crisp cotton sheets, a G&T and a hearty meal are essential so it's a hotel or B&B for us. _________________ David

Have had quite few holidays in the old car but the constraint is secure parking so accommodation tends to be country rather than town. Am about to embark on an SS Register tour for a few days.
In the past my wife used to write restaurant reviews and we would take the SS and eat in nice country house hotels for a day or two at a time.
Have never traveled very far though. The furthest extents have been Northern Ireland, Yorkshire and North of Scotland.

As my wife and I only have old cars (most modern is a 1982 SD1), of course we take them on holidays. A few years ago now, 1959 Rover P4 to Alice Springs, a return trip of about 4,500 miles, SD1 return trip to Perth, about 5,500 miles,m and some shorter outings in our 1950 Rover Cyclops of only about 1.5 to 2 thousand miles each.
Here in Oz we find tourist cabins at caravan parks, both good value and generally readily available. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

Its weird being the same age as old people.

I've done a few long haul road trip/holidays in the last 50 years.
My tips for an enjoyable time.
All on board have to be as keen as you.
At least two people need to be able to navigate, even if one of those is much better. You can always change over to put the best navigator in the passenger seat. I love GPS but Sheila (we call ours Sheila) is our servant not our commander. Actual maps are still used to monitor location and direction
Compass and know how it works.
Keep the interior organised
Try to set the minimum number of targets. Stress can build if there are delays for whatever reason.
All aboard need to enjoy what is on the other side of the glass.
Now in the age of the surgically grafted "dumb phones" they have to be off.
Enjoy light conversation and have an interest in all you see. You don't need to be an expert in all subjects.
Try and enjoy the experience, whatever, because in the future you will likely laugh at most things that happened.
...... Remember the 400lb, pistol packing security guard at a McDonalds in Miami ?
" excuse me sir, but you are definitely in the wrong neighbourhood to be looking at a map .... " |

I've gone on a couple of camping-trip holidays, in the Dellow.
Usually with a couple of mates who ride motorcycles.
{The Dellow is my 'bike'.........I get just as wet as they do, and deafened....but, as it's a very narrow car, it can get through gaps a bike can..useful on campsites where we want to pitch out-of-the-way of the usual BBQ-ing noisy folk...I can get through gates in fences which are only wide enough for ride-on mowers! }
Mileages can be quite high.....usually much tripping around...and I don't really lose any ground to the bikes, either....despite only having a Ford sidevalve engine for power. Took my 18 year old son on our last trip...he learnt to sit sideways-on, such is the cramped nature of a Dellow cockpit.
The only 'running 'issues I get occur when I forget to pack a litre or two of suitable oil...the stuff most 'garages' flog resembles gnat's pee in comparison. The fuel tank holds nearly 15 gallons...costs a fortune to fill up! When clocking-on a bit, fuel consumption can get into the low 20's.
Getting out [of the car] for a break is an essential aspect of these journeys..one the bike riders also appreciate. The first 20 seconds involve very careful unfolding of legs, arms back etc.....then I'm off like a spring lamb!
The driving position for me is a bit like a prolonged yoga class. |

Have we ever! She hasn't been to Ireland but every other country in Europe that I can think of. The last tour included Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Croatia, Bosnia and Italy. Over the years I don't think that there is a country in Europe except Ireland and Finland that she hasn't seen. Next year is the grand tour of Scotland for a couple of weeks. |

We spend a week in Jersey most summers, lovely island and lovely people with a thriving classic scene.
We plan to rebuild our 55 Minx and take it over for the Festival of Motoring which is held at the start of June each year. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Always do. One's a 30 year old camper van, the other a Range Rover classic towing a 38 year old classic Royale caravan, so holidays is what they're meant for1 |
