Just got my tax reminder for the ford popular, on the left of the form it has
registration number, underneath Make Ford, under that Tax class Historic vehicle, under that 1172cc and under that This vehicle needs an appropriate mot test certificate.

on the right amongst all the dross it says you no longer need an mot to tax a pre 1960 vehicle.
They do like to make things difficult beyond reasonable.
I guess it will be even worse come May 2018

I get that all the time....I queried it some time ago [just after DVLA's IT changeover]....the answer I got was, there will be, on record [or, proof needs providing]...that there is either [a] a current MoT, or [b] form V-whateveritis declaring exemption [box at the bottom]....either needs completing & presenting , or there is a record of.

I think it very unclearly{!} refers to when folk actually go in front of a post person at a post office? [Instead of doing it online, which is quick and avoid papercuts.]

I think the confusion is more due to officialdom not knowing its right hand from its left. I also queried the contradiction in that form and further, demanded an explanation that a car be "taxed" but no money required. I maintained that a tax is a payment and that SORN is nothing less than an infringement of my personal liberty. I don't ever expect to receive a satisfactory explanation but if no one says anything the idiots will think we are content.

It's not 'tax'.....it's Vehicle Excise Duty. {VED}

Like customs duty.

.............and like some customs duty, attracts a zero value....officially.

Taxes pretty much have to be paid..unless tax-free [or, zero-rated]....but sometimes Customs duty can be avoided [more by luck than good judgment, usually], as in, when 'parts' are purchased from overseas?

SO they won't respond to a query over 'tax'....they will respond to a query over the rate of Excise Duty payable.

I taxed my car at the post office, and she insisted on giving me a receipt for £0.00. So I wrote her a cheque for the same amount. Seemed fair to me.

On the subject of cheques, which are rare these days, I have signed them all M Mouse for 15 years and never had one returned. So much for banks!

Ray-...Apologies....the DVLA site also refers to VED as 'tax'....although the term used does depend on how deeply one investigates stuff on the .gov site?

My guess is...like a lot of official documents that are revised , to make them 'easy to read'....they are created by people who fall into the trap of urban myth, and poor grammar. Probably a task given to an E1 grade to give them something to do?

TAxing at the one's local [sub] post office..village or estate....is a good way of making DVLA pay , for no income.

The sub-post office............many of which only survive through usage..for which they charge the various Agencies a sort-of handling fee. [admin fee?]....will charge DVLA for the pleasure of dealing with one's historic vehicle tax.....
DVLA get nowt in return.....

I actually go 'out of my way' to use a village PO....rather than going into town...with all the parking hassles, queueing, etc.....

and of course the DVLA still refer to an MOT Certificate, even though the dear old Ministry of Transport vanished forty-five years ago ...
