Hi
Which GPS navigation systems are best, are the garmin are best due to them using navteq maps or something over a tom tom, but then the tom tom have better speakers and a person who speaks to you, not a robot?
Which are best and cheapest (if you have to pay) to update?
Also this unit would be being used in Ireland most of the time, so which has the best coverage there?
Some help here would be really apriciated as I am really lost!
Cheers

For that you would need to look at the more expensive units.
Most of the power boaters that I know use portable Garmin units that can they can transfer between their boats and cars. They can be programed to the areas that you want to use.
I don't know of anyone using the ones that talk to you except for units in new vehicles. |

I think Dabs now have decent units for under £200, folk at work have tom tom, navteq, garmin and they all seem pretty reliable, worth looking if you can enter a postcode, some units you can't and this can be a useful feature.
http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=4J9Y&CategorySelectedId=11035&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11035&InMerch=1
Its also worth looking at what maps are included and what other maps / upgrades cost. I have a unit that is built into my car it has full UK maps but only major routes for the rest of Europe, the CD to upgrade to full maps for Europe is over £100!!!

Hi
Thanks I will have a look at the link.
Does anyone know how detailed the maps are of the republic of ireland, are all of the lanes on it? Most lanes are not named over there, and the other thing they don't have is postcodes, but I agree that could be a useful feature when we use it over here.
Cheers

The disc states UK and Ireland.
It is known, by my GrandDaughter, as "That stupid woman GrandDad argues with". |

Me to! my company hack Toyota Avensizzzz has satnav built in, but I very rarely use it, as the constant demands it barks out at every junction drive me round the bend, its just like having the Mother in law in the car |

Pun intended i hope.....
I have the tom tom 700 which is about 2 years old now and works well. From my experience and it is limited to the Tom tom is that it's an excellent piece of kit. I'd plan my journeys with map book pen and paper and now i don't even take a map book. I use it mainly to get to and more importantly AWAY from away football matches. I don't care which way I'm pointing i just get in and drive off. It will eventually tell me the right way to go which is handy if you have 1000's of hairy monstrosities that are known as away fans coming at you.
I've had trouble at the new roads such as the new bypass at Ferrybridge as it kept telling me I had to turn left as i was in a field but a couple of months later the roads had been updated. I've never paid for updates and don't connect it to the computer now.
Sometimes if you have a heated front windscreen then this shields the tom tom from the sats so you have to buy an expensive outside aerial.
I bought one from staples and asked what the return policy is. They said 14 days no quibble so I used one for my holidays and took it back. I did so primarily because my miggy has a heated screen but also to test the no quibble return. I got a full refund so in turn I "borrowed" one for my holidays. However it was so useful I did go back and buy one from Carphone wharehouse ( cheaper) and i attach it to the drivers window and it plays happy all day long. It is TOTR and can be set with favourite places, routes via different places, also specifics such as fastest route, shortes route, cycling, walking, avoid motorways etc.
I can't see any time when I'd buy a map book again now but as I say I only have and tried the Tom Tom.

Hi
Do you know if the minor roads in the republic of ireland are covered on the tom tom, as a lot of them don't have road names, a few years back it wasn't any good, but some say it has got alot better, this is what I am trying to find out, if it has or not??
Cheers for the reply

I use a PDA, loaded with Tom Tom. Great in Europe, but it shows only the major roads in Ireland.
Slightly different subject, but I read the "can you use your classic abroad?" question. Our 1946 F Type Morgan has taken us over to France more than once, and a trip up to Skye, then 1000 miles on the Outer Hebridies (the beaches on Barra are superb, white sand, blue sea, and the east coast of Lewis takes some beating) We are also looking forward to Orkney again soon. |
