Bought the mag this morning expecting a little more coverage actually, seems a bit brief considering the undertaking of importing the cars etc.

I suspect these PC guys really aren't the enthusiasts they profess to be, for example later on in the magazine the entire staff couldn't identify a Renault Juvaquattre (quite a common vehicle) and it was left to a reader to identify the car for them.

Anyway, my reluctance to praise the magazine has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I was turned down for the recently advertised position of 'staff writer', in favour of a chap that admits in his first column to having next to no knowledge or experience of classic cars!

I would love to work for a classic car magazine, but as I am non to hot at spelling, and writing perhaps that is not the career for me!

Buzzy that's because your brain must have a more 'practical' or 'hands-on' mode than mine, I can write about cars all day long but if I ever had to actually weld one then...ooh - er!

Is it me but are most of these "classic" car mags running there own 30 year rolling block because most of the articals and there own staff cars seem to come from the 70s or 80s but then if you look at the team photos at the front of the mag most are in there twenties or thirties so probably cant relate to anything older anyway, hay dont get me wrong every one to their own but I wish they would try to get a better balance. I for one have stopped getting classic car weekly on a regular bases and only get it now when there is some thing of real interest and not another buyers guied on a 1980s BMW or VW again, it started to go down hill a year or so back when they started to run there how to update and modify your classic articals - some were almost custon jobs when they had finished with them. I too don't buy magazines on a regular basis any more, I prefer to just spend the money on more practical items. The magazines I used to buy used to run how to guides but they were allways silly things in my opinion, nothing of real interest to me.

There is a few magazines dedicated to older cars, which are good to read, but then again magazines seem a little worthless to me, when you can get the same info for free on the net most of the time.

I have always been an avid reader of all things motoring, I still have several hundred copies of Practical classics, even large numbers of 'Practical Motorists' dating from 1954 - 1962.

My point is that from a very early age I have loved reading motoring journalism, mostly because it reflected the same sort of enthusiasm as I had myself.
Today's offerings are simply a rehash of the many articles that have appeared before, much like the so called 'cover versions' of songs.

Furthermore, the modern writers enthusiasm for his subject tends to be as genuine as posh spice's pout. And it's common to find an ex editor of, or contributor to a classic car mag' moving on to 'Galvanising weekly' or some such drivel.
The considerations for today's motoring journo's are mainly financial, the 'qualifications' required are often media based degree's, while enthusiasm for the subject is way down on the list - which is why magazines today are overpriced, full of advertisements, and give a sense of deja-vu.

Thanks again to Brian for the heads-up, I had a flick through the mag in WH Smith this afternoon.

I've looked at a few mags and papers of late, but with buyers guides for Maestros and Acclaims (shudder), I stick to The Automobile as that has a cut-off of 1960, and works for me just fine

I'm with Old Nail on this one.

I have been buying Classics Cars, Classic and Sportscar, and Practical Classics for 25-30 years and have kept every one of them.

I find that reading these three takes me exactly one month and so I always have some fresh bed-time reading.

Along with 10years of Motor Sport from the 70's, Autocars from the 60's and 70's, and a few others, I have over 2000 magazines in the loft.

I bring down a box at a time and dip into the old ones as a reminder of how the classic scene has changed over the years.

I know where your coming from with the re-hash of old articals I remember when I was a wee small boy (About 15) and all things Jaguar were king, I would collect any mag artical on them and read again and again (Ok so I read other types of mags as well when I was 15 but we wont go there today) any way one of my favoret ones was on a road test of a D type Jag where the chap was given the chance to drive the car on the road for a few hours Cant remember the mag now but it was one of the main stream ones. I kept that mag for years and read it again and again (Oh the inocence of youth) any way about three years ago I was looking through the mags in Smiths and saw a D type on the front of another well known mag, it took a mater of seconds to realise on reading through it that it was the same artical 25 years later with a "new" reporter in a differant mag with only the cars he was supposed to have had a "burn up" with on the M1 being differant ie more up to date models to fit the artical. Still having the original mag I sent it with a copy of the new one and a letter of complaint, Guess who didnt get a reply, so guess who isnt on my news agents orders list now. Regards Steve

buzzy, it turns up in some of the local newsagents (Smiths etc) although not usually in great numbers so worth a regular look. I think the P.O. in Nantwich gets it too

Most news agents can order it for you I have no trouble getting it here in Norfolk
