Hi

I have got the truck running as you all know, but it seems to dislike starting, making a hissing noise, is this too much choke?

Also when I accelerate it kind of back fires out of the top of the air filter, which is scary, and noisy! It then looses all torqe and tries to stall, unless I dip the clutch!

Any ideas?

I need it to run smoothly, then I will get the fuel pump working, and start building the front up.

So are you running with a gravity feed into the carb at the moment? or into the fuel pump?

No air leaks?? especially the little take-off on the manifold that goes to the vacuum wipers?

Mine used to make more of an air/hissing sound when on choke, that went once the choke knob was pushed home again.

I assume all the following are aok:

- points gap
- plug gaps
- timing
- good HT/LT leads and connections (spark not arcing away anywhere?)
- checked condenser/rotor/coil
- are the jets in the base of the float chamber clear? and also those on the emulsion block (I think its called)

The hissing sound is normal when the choke is on, it was the same on my old sidevalve ford Popular

If you can bring it round we can stick it on the Crypton scope & see whats going on, or you can borrow a scope if its not moveable.

Hi

I will check all of the points, and gaps etc first, the water has defianteley got into the engine bay as it is all rusty, you know the type water rust as I call it, Very thin surface stuff.

It is gravity fed, as I need to put new valves in my pump but they were the wrong ones, they were too big, now I have found another pump, I can't find the new valves typical!

Good to know the hissing is normal!

UK, I would bring it over, and once it is a bit further on if the offer remains open, I will do, be good to do a diagnosis and check everything. I want to get it a bit more done before moving it again, front end on, loom in, door catches, glass etc. Then I just have the brakes and engine to sort out.

Yeah I have just about managed to mop it out, it is just drying up and airing out now.

I also have got the clubman at my mums under cover there, so that is good.

Hopefully go to do some more pickup today.

P.S... The thing I need to find out about next is where the brake senser switch for the brake lights fits, and what kind I need, any ideas?

Hi

Well pis*ed off isn't the word!! Twisted Evil

I went to my gargae this pm, intending to move the truck out, tun around and drive in forwards, so I have have the lights over my head, and a bench next to me, to do the wiring and engine. I also wanted to get it as far over in the garage to one side as I could, so I will have a little more space. Space was tight wit the truck in the middle, and then my lathe and bicycles at one side too, these will migrate into a shed when I have built it!

So I get it out, and it stops running, and it won't kick up again! great so I move it by hand, with all the bits in the back it is heavy real heavy! I do this and get it semi lined up to go back in but the back end was out about 3/4 of a meter!

I get the trolley jack and try to drag the back on that, no joy, too heavy, so I drop it down, oo, it moves a cm or so everytime I jack and drop it, so that is what I did, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, jacked , dropped, and so on and so forth for a few hours, my back is killing, jacking under the back, so no leverage and caught my hand on every stroke!

Anyway it is line up, then I decide one final go at starting her, no joy, I will have to push her. I just could not get her in, over the lump that stops water going under the garage door. I decided to ring my sister, she said she could come and help, but I decided to have awalk down the street and see if I could find any help. Yes! I found someone Very Happy Damn Sad it was about an 80 year old lady! Damn Damn Damn!!! I thought it is going to have to be my sister, then I saw two builder/groundworkers packing up, just about to get in there van to go for there tea, so I aproached them, and asked for assistance. They said no problem!

They came and between the three of us we just got it in, and it was really tight on one side so I have to do a bit more trolley jacking for final manouvering, now it is in a great position, that it will stay untill I have done the electricks, fuel and engine running well if I can get!

one trick that can work is put it in gear and turn the engine on the handle, slow going but can get you out of a corner

(least you must have been warm on this chilly day Wink)

Don't forget to take the plugs out.
1 It makes it easier.
2 You can almost guarantee that you will leave it switched on, and it will fire up as you try to wind it in.

You can also wind it along on the starter if that is working. this is a trick often used by people who get stuck in water crossings, plays havoc with the amount of charge left though.

reminds me of a neighbour friend years ago, he'd heard that you could rock a car back n forth in gear to free off a stuck starter. Unfortunately he forgot to turn the ignition off. His car, a Spitfire (choke full on) started up with this rocking. and shot off down the road, into the side of his mum's Volvo Shocked

Hi

I have to modify my handle, as I thought of that, went to use it and it is too long, it fouls on the bumper. In hindsight could have allways teken the bumper off, all of the two bolts! Rolling Eyes
