A little tricky I know, but can anyone hazard a guess as to the model of Matchless shown here? the pic is dated August 1937

I'm going to take a stab at this.

Assuming that the bike was in original condition, I think that there are two possibilities. Most likely, its a 1936 Model X, although the tank looks a bit wrong. It could also be a Silver Hawk, but if it is, the electric horn is missing, and had been replaced...

I believe that the sidecar is a Watsonian but it is difficult with the bike as I can not recognize the front mudguard as coming from any of the models I have illustrations for. It's possibly not original. Apart from that: I would go along with with what UJ suggests.

pigtin, is that O-N or UJ?

Maybe you can confirm this from your illustrations. If my memory serves, the Silver Hawk and 1937-on X's had a large electric horn that sat above and in the centre of the handlebars.

The tank scheme looks correct for a Hawk, but not an X.

Matchless did supply X's with sidecars though. That 990 V-twin must have made for a very nice hauler...

Sorry UJ... senior moment.

As for the horn: my illustrations show a huge, ugly Klaxon type thingy. But just behind it is a control panel, mounted level with the handlebars, with the damper knob protruding through. It's the same with the Silver Arrow.
