My wife may not like old cars but she took enough interest in my new Rudge Whitworth centre laced wheels to come up with an idea that I thought I must share.
I explained to her that to balance centre lock wheels/tyres on an electronic balancer required them to be mounted using an externally located lock nut...rather than the normal cone type that tyre fitters use now. These days places that still offer this service are few and far between; my nearest seems to be Longstone Tyres at Bawtry Doncaster.
Jean suggested that should I ever get a puncture and want to ensure the balance of the wheel I should mark the tyre next to the valve before hand so it could be re fitted in the same place.
Seems to make perfect sense. |

Most new tyres have a dot that marks the lightest point of the tyre, this is aligned with the valve, specifically to reduce the amount of balancing required.

Yes, very good advice.
If like me you find that your brake drums are not balanced either and you don't want the expense of getting them individually balanced then you need to balance your wheels (on a free axle) along with the brake drum and mark the drums with the position of the tyre valve too.
