I like the wartime portraits, it is rumoured that her mother actually asked her if she knew what she was doing.

To me the ATS portraits are very evocative of the era, to me she was that bridge between the ages. In my case of my grandparents, parents, myself and now my children. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Interesting to see that the vehicle following the hearse is not carrying any registration plates.
I thought such vehicles could only be used by the sovereign. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

That is the Queen's Bentley and as far as I know was never registered.
The Princess Royal is following the hearse to Edinburgh in the Royal car. |

It is sobering to think that while we are watching the progression of Operations Unicorn, London Bridge and Spring Tide, that already a similar set of operations have to be being prepared, if they have not already been done. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Tonight's Countryfile at about 33-35 mins in shows her Princess R Estate

But a website about the Princess R brochure acknowledges Ray's point.

It's such a crying shame that her final journey from her beloved Balmoral, had to be in the back of a Mercedes!
How terrible that we no longer have a truly British car to convey "Elizabeth the Great".

I agree. The Merc. was unsuitable on so many levels.
I am sure there will have been complaints; especially from the older generation. I shall be interested to see what type of hearse is sent to collect the coffin when the Royal flight lands at Northolt. |

I too was disappointed to see a Mercedes but let's face it even the "Bentley" behind is a Bentley in name only. We don't really have a car industry.
The choice was almost certainly not that of a politician but simply that of a commercial outfit, in this case the long standing Edinburgh firm of William Purves. Pragmatism rules.

True, but there must be plenty of classic vehicles that would be suitable. They would, of course, have to consider reliability - no good using an old Rolls-Royce one and having it break down when virtually the entire world is watching.
