Yes, the small terminal was touching the edge of the case |
The larger terminal is the output.
The shorted terminal would explain the fuse blowing! hopefully, hopefully the fuse has done it's job and protected the alternator electronics.
I'd put the battery back and fingers crossed you will get a charge. |

...but I am not getting an OHM reading with my multimeter at the output terminal - regardless of which way round I have the probes. |

Possibly the Stealth Alternators don't have surge diode protection, not all alternators do, hence you are not getting any reading.

I have just tried it again and although no blown fuse this time, I still have no warning light.
I have spoken this morning to Accuspark and they have informed me that they have no repair facilities. They are also unable to answer technical questions over the phone and expect me to email them.
As it happens I bought it from MG Octagon Club Spares and they can''t help either.
I can see me having to buy another new one unless I can get it repaired.
My 'go to' auto electrician has closed and is now working for Aston Martin. |

| Something isn't right here.. the fault you found would explain why the fuse kept blowing, however it's unlikely to have damaged anything in the alternator. |

...Except that I found the fault days ago before the fuse blowing episode began. I have looked at my schematic again and I have missed out the fuse that kept blowing. On the coloured TC wiring diagram the fuse is between A4 and A3. On one side I have the white wire from the ignition switch and on the other there are two more white wires ...one to 85 and the other to the coil (not yet connected).
I think the fuse blowing may have been because
between A3 and A4 there was an earth terminal. This might have been needed with a dynamo but not with the alternator which is fused through the relay. I have removed the wires and grounded them to the body. Since which, even a 15 amp fuse seems to hold.
However, the ignition warning light is still not getting power but there is continuity between 87 and the lamp.
As I mentioned previously I have tested the relay so I suppose the Dynamator must be faulty.
In desperation I have spoken to two mobile auto electricians who claim to have experience with Classic cars but they don't want to know.
I have also spoken to our local classic car garage and it is not something they can help with (too old apparently). I explained that everything is new and modern but to no avail.
In addition to Mr Nelson packing up, another old auto electrician guy has died, while another never opened again after Covid.
I have also sent messages to other more knowledgeable TC owners but so far have had no response.
Dave, you are a great help. Please keep with it. |

The Dynamator came with a very rudimentary diagram. The one you have found is virtually as I have done it with the exception that instead of having two wires from the switch to the A3 terminal and relay I have just taken a wire from A3 to 85. I have also earthed 30 with 86 rather than separately.
I may well use this diagram and print it out. I did once come across this T Talk .info site but forgot what it was called and lost it...so many thanks for posting.
If my Dynamator needs repair, doubtless the photos and info will prove invaluable. |
