She's back on ebay apparently due to a timewaster...and this time not getting anywhere near the bidding as last time....

Seller says it is a 16 from 1933.
A quick check shows Hillman did not list a 16 for 1933, they only arrived in 1934.
So what is this, a Wizard? Or a 16? From a later year?

Its definately a Hillman 16, the Wizard has quite different front end styling. I think you're right its just listed the wrong year as the Model was introduced in 1934.

A quick check:

Of course is all dependent on how accurately vehicle data was added to the DVLA database in the 80's.

Maybe Hillman was the same as Morris and others where the car is listed as a 1934 model but was available after the British Motor show usually about August (in the 1930's) in 1933.

That could well be the answer.

Again she failed to meet her reserve.

I notice this quite often with vehicles on ebay with a reserve. First time listed and ending without reaching the reserve generally seems to be the highest price they get to. When listed again they often fail to reach near that price again.

What was the reserve?

I am asking myself what makes the seller think the car is worth more than the market will pay?

If the Hillman was put into a public auction (Mathewsons etc.) I doubt it would attract any more; maybe less. Having said that I would have expected it to reach 5K... but the market for pre War cars is not what it was.

Just imagine the fun of getting that car running again. The instruments look interesting; combining water and petrol on one side and oil and amps on the other. I would have fun remaking the dashboard. (I have a lovely piece of mahogany that my Dad rescued from a demolition in the 1960s)

If all I had to worry about was getting replacement hub caps I would be be a happy bunny.

The engine looks like it has been painted; probably rebuilt before the car was parked up many years ago... and the steel body seems exceptionally good for it's age.!!

I would, however, whip off those horrible rear lights and replace with something more age appropriate.

Incidentally, what I assume to be the first tax disc has amazingly survived! It shows a date of 16 Jan 1934... so possibly the car was built some time in 1933 but would have been described (as in their salesman's booklet) as a 1934 model)

On line information shows that the 16/20 and the 20/70 were - apart from the engine - very similar and sold for the same price.

I presume the chrome plated radiator shell was only present on the early cars; before going over to a painted shell. Another feature of an early car is the two piece instrument cluster. This was changed to a simpler one piece item at some point. The surviving maker's plate records this as car No.16 thus supporting my assertion that this is an early car.

I wouldn't mind betting that the milage shown is also correct. The condition certainly points to a low milage car.

In all, a remarkable survivor and a genuinely historic vehicle.

At the end of the day what a buyer will pay determines the value. From what I can see, a lot of pre stuff has dropped around 20% in value over the last couple of years, 70 & 80s vehicles increased by around the same, the seller may have to take a lower offer, or be stuck with it.

I've been a restorer and owner of prewar Hillmans now for around 25 years...they've never held value like other manufacturers, never been avidly sought after either so sometimes real rarities can be found for relatively small sums.

Add to that the prewar market slipping over the last few years and it makes cars like this harder to sell for a strong price.

It's a very rare early 16, we would love it in our collection...if we had the room!!!
