So, we've spent the day getting our trucks ready for a show next weekend. We have now got an issue with our restored 1942 Commer.

A good, fully charged battery attached...the starter just gives a single click when the button is pressed...

Its got new terminals and I even linked one of the Hillmans battery's to make sure it wasn't a faulty original battery. It made no difference.

Lastly I checked the wiring on the starter, it's all fine, connected and nothing frayed.

But...I wondered if it may be the solenoid, so with a rubber mallet end I pushed the solenoid in and she turned over immediately and powerfully. I tried it again and with the same result, she turned over lovely. I then got back in the cab and pushed the started button...just a single click again.

I take it the Solenoid needs replacing...but, the lorry is being loaded and taken to the show first thing on Thursday morning and I am at work till then...so for the show I may need to lie under the truck each time I need to start her!!!

Unfortunately, there is sometimes no dignity in owning and running an old classic vehicle. So take a roll of bin bags to lie on in case it rains when you need to start it! Wink

Alternatively, perhaps think about ordering a new solenoid, then fitting it while you are at the rally? From personal experience, nothing gathers a crowd of spectators like somebody repairing a vehicle while it's on display. But don't blame me if this suggestion goes horribly wrong!

Is the starter solenoid properly earthed?

Now that's something I can double check before we go.

Yes, that will be me for this show. If she doesn't start on the button I'm happy to lie under her just for this weekend. It is the last show she's booked in for so it can be added to the list of winter work.
