I remember that episode well. There could not have been a better advert for Toyota; not at any price!
If I wanted a tough, no nonsense pick up, I would get one...largely due to that show! |

i have one a mk3 the next one after the top gear one, but underneath the same basic vehicle, ben super reliable and only now after 24 years of ownership, (it is 28year old) am i having to spend money on it.
it is used every day for work and the only thing that does not work is the interior light!
front brake pads changed at 120,000 and only changed the clutch at 145,000 miles.
rust is the only thing now that will need sorting in the next few years.
i would not sell it unless we can't drive it anymore. |

Well done....consul 57!
Toyota have a new model pickup in the Hilux range, called the Hilux Champ.
Intended to be a completely no nonsense cheap basic pickup truck, without any sort of frills whatsoever.
I don't think it's for sale in the UK, but it is reckoned to be the cheapest available pickup truck in the USA, at around $12000 new, for the base model!
Now that sort of vehicle appeals to me immensely.
Only two [or three?] seats [who really truthfully needs more anyway? If they do, buy another vehicle?}, and although worldwide it has petrol & Doyzel engines, the UK website only lists a basic Diesel.
The base model comes with a factory bed...but it can be had as a chassis/cab, plus LWB.
It only comes with 2wd which is fine by me....But it does come with a choice of headlight types....I would opt for the type mostly like the old fashioned cream headlights, not these new fangled supadazzlers that annoy other road users immensely.
Probably ever see it for sale in the UK, as we like to spend loadsadosh on silly little techno gismos....and forget the base purposes of transport.
Still, I digress.....I'd love the old OCC Dodge pickup, even with its fuel consumption.....proper muddy wellie stuff! _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

I "used" to own one as well. An RN model from 1995, I bought it with 120 thousand Ks on it 20 years ago and it now has just over 350 thousand Ks on the clock, and "still" on the original engine and drivetrain. It was used every day, and when I moved away from the farm to make way for my nephew, I brought it down here to the coast with me where I used it for another 10 years keeping it until 3 months ago when I sold it to the same nephew who wanted a light small cheap ute for his two daughters to learn to drive in, so it went back up to the farm. In the entire time I owned it I hardly had to do "anything" to it, and even now it is still "running" great, but "looking" a bit tired. I bought it because I wanted a small, light, fast economical ute to use traveling the 100 miles to the city or the 50 to 60 miles to our regional centres to pick up supplies and parts, and at that it excelled. I already had it when I saw "topgears" hilux for the first time, but that re enforced to me that they are pretty good for a budget vehicle, even if what they did was more for show than a "real" test. "still B####y entertaining" |
