It was built the year after I left for Australia.
It used to be a Morris Motors dealership and I used to get my spare parts for my original Morris 8 Tourer from them.
There used to be a line of garages they rented out on the left looking from Davey Lane and the workshop, spares and showroom were up the back. The now petrol station was a private house. For many years there was a Morris Cowley flat nose breakdown truck derelict behind the row of garages on Davey lane side which we kids used to play on.
I was in the choir at the church, St Philips C of E, seen in the background.
Royles in the middle of the village was a Standard-Triumph dealer, my father bought a new Standard 8 in 1955 there, and Eadingtons at the top end of the shops on the left were also dealers (can't remember what brand, I know it was not Vauxhall or Ford, and services. Quite a large busy workshop.
I seem to recall an old picture of the Tower Garage on this site some time ago.

Very interesting collection.
In the 1950's mopeds were very popular. Some were engines attached to existing bicycles ans some were complete factory built mopeds.
I attached a Vincent Firefly to my Raleigh Sports bicycle just prior to my 16th birthday and passed my licence test on my birthday on it, which allowed me to drive any size motorcycle or vehicle classed as a motorcycle!! My friend bought a BSA Winged Wheel for his bicycle, which was similar to the Cyclemaster only much neater. The Cyclemaster was not very quick. A popular factory model was the NSU Quickly which was a very nice unit. I worked with a fellow who had been a despatch rider in the army in WW1 in France and he had an NSU and he was 64 years old. He used to tell me about all the mud, dead horses and soldiers lying on the roads etc how he came off the bike many times after hitting things on the roads and how quickly he had to get up or get shot by the Germans. His bike only got hit once but it kept going. I think it was a BSA.
I got a fractured skull when a Bond Mini Car came through a halt (stop) sign without stopping. Nobody wore a helmet on a moped!

Rick, I do enjoy seeing your videos.
Imagine living with a steam car like that Stanley! I think it would take over one's life...
I have a secret passion for steam cars and once tried to buy one, but sadly just missed out.
As a matter of little interest, I was, for a number of years, a member of the Steam Car Club of Great Britain and indeed my only claim to fame is sourcing a genuine 1904 Lcomobile body from the U.S.A. for another members's epic restoration.  |
