Wasn't there a Rolls V8 with the spark plugs located on the underside of the V?
I believe it meant removal of both front wheels, and an underwing panel on each side, in order to access the plugs.

That was the "silver cloud" 3, but I don't think the plugs were on the "underside" of the head, it was just that the six cylinder engine bay was a tight fit for the V8. I never did one, but I remember the dedicated Rolly man taking them off to do it.

As for Rolls parts being expensive, when I was working there, Adrian the Rolls mechanic showed us a gear set out of a silver shadow that had to be replaced. The Rolls Royce part in a Rolls Royce box cost $2500 dollars, at the time about the same cost as a "new" Holden sedan, and he recon'd it was a bit much even for Rolls Royce, so he trotted off to City motors, the local GM dealer and bought a gearset for the same Turbo Hydramatic to suit a Cadilac, cost $500 (and "Cadilac" parts arent renound for being cheap)

On the Rolls Royce Merlin, Griffin and possibly other V 12 engines there were spark plugs in the lower part of the V and needed small hands and fingers to remove or install. If you dropped one it was a nightmare to retrieve it. I remember changing plugs on a Griffin (Avro Shackleton MK3) one morning after the fitters gave me the job and a strict warning "if you drop one you get it out". It was so cold that morning my milk froze in a bottle on top of my toolbox in a heated hangar. I was an apprentice with smaller hands and my hands went numb. The aircraft had been parked outside all night.

Rusty talks about the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud 3.

Both the 2 and the 3 had the V8 engine...and personally I wouldn't go near one.! The Cloud 1, however, was a much more friendly beast with - as I mentioned previously - a lovely straight six of 4.9 litres. Sadly, this range of cars, like it's forerunners - the MkV1 and R Types were prone to terminal rot.

When I lived in Sunningdale, my Office was just across the road from Sunningdale Motors (no longer a garage). I remember them collecting a very crusty RR Cloud 1 from Scotland. I would have said it was a scrapper. Howevefr, it had a nice interior and after just a short time in their body shop it appeared in the showroom looking superb.!

Caveat emptor indeed !
