Having seen Rick's video on the amazing Alvis hoard, I would now know what to look for with regard to hidden body and chassis rot.
If This car passes muster and is as sound as it should be then it ticks a lot of boxes for me. I am particularly drawn to it having EPS as the original steering was reported to be a wee bit heavy especially for manouvering.
I know Rick loves these TD21 cars as do I. We, I am sure, would be in agreement that the series 11 cars are the ones to look out for.
Maybe it is not as good close close up?. I do think these darker colour cars photo well and can hide a multitude of flaws.
Anyone else like it? |

I've always had a liking for these.....A very understated tweed jacket type of motorcar.
But probably around 19 grand more than I'd have to spend on such a thing.
Reasonable MoT history, with little mention of chassis rot.
These, and Bristols, are for me, the only gentlepersons' carriage...
Not suitable transport for a scruffy Oike like me!

Alastair; it was "scruffy oikes" like you, albeit 'Ampshire 'Ogs not Yorkshiremen, who built boats for Nelson's fleet at Bucklers Hard. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Alastair. I understand where you are coming from. From my perspective, however, the story is all about aspiration. When these quality cars were new they sold in quite small numbers for very high prices; far out of the reach of the average man in the street.
Now they are old and tired, some of these still desirable cars are within my reach and I am sorely tempted to throw caution to the wind.... |

Hi Peter.
Unfortunately the MG rebuild has suffered a set back which means I will not have it ready to move it on in time to replace it with my forever car.
From what I can see the Alvis is a nice one but I would need to do a close examination as these cars are so prone to rot. To get an idea of the timber frame condition, one should prod the underside of the rear window that is accessed from the boot. If the wood is soft then it's probably best to walk away. The rear of the chassis where it kicks up over the axle can delaminate. If this is happening; again reject it ...unless a total body off restoration is planned!
That would be too much for me. |

You are quite right, Dave. I do, however, have to consider the other person in my life.
Jean already takes a dim view of my decision making regarding cars and would be even less impressed if I took an even bigger hit with the MG than I need to.
The Swallow will also need a bit of work before it is ready for sale; as we have said, the market for pre War cars is weak so it would make sense to at least present it well. |

| I used to see an ice blue metallic convertible Alvis being driven around the Nantwich area on nice, dry, days by an elderly gentleman a few years ago. A very stylish looking car. I've not seen it for two or three years though, so fear he's either sold it, or gone to the great car show in the sky. |

| While I really like the TD21, I don't think I could live with the later models and their 'stacked' headlights. Shame really because they were an improvement in many ways. |
