Hi
I found some nice pics in the NLA library ,of Australian motoring history .
This scene depicts a petrol station in the Northern Territory circa 1948. The Jeep is one of over 15,000 jeeps Australia received as Lend Lease during WW2. The trailer is an Australian jeep trailer made by Holden and Ford. Note the spare Leaf springs and hand winch on the front of the jeep.

Morris Commercial D type 6x4.
The chap is Michael Terry , he was a explorer adventurer , he travelled on many outback expeditions in Western Australia down to Adelaide during the 1920s and 1930s.

These are Karrier trucks , these were popular with local councils around Melbourne but they disappeared from the streets in the 1970s. Jubbly was a brand of orange juice

It's funny seeing that photo of yours of the "Oldsmobile" truck! I know a family that own a lighter version say about half to three quarter tonner of those. Unfortunately, it's not in very good order and because of family connections they refuse point blank to sell it. Hot rodders have been after it for over 20 years, and I know at least two truck enthusiasts have tried to prize it from their grasp, but they "still have it.
I love all the other photos as well, brings back a lot of memories from "oh" so long ago!!
Thankyou! |

Skinny wheels as well of course. Has Australia adopted the Yank habit of "changing a tyre" when they mean "changing a wheel"?
If you have the rights for the Dennis photo or if it is open sourced, the Dennis Society would, I am sure, appreciate an "in use" photo from the Antipodes. I wonder if that is a local body on a Dennis chassis or if that body was also Guildford built.

May I post the picture on a Guildford Past and Present FB page? _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

During the late '60s my parents had a general store on a housing estate, the local kids and my own loved these.
https://www.doyouremember.co.uk/memory/jubbly-frozen-drinks
They weren't frozen from the wholesalers but only about 10% of them were ever sold for liquid use or home freezing.
The TV jingle used the words "Lubbly Jubbly".
Was that the Oz system as well,
or did you get it in bottles? _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi , this is the original link to the NLA file. The copyright status is uncertain.

Amazed to see the Karrier trucks all seem to be started by hand. They did have an electric starter of course. Was this to save on battery costs?
Also, intriguing to see the hand on a stick held by the driver. To be used when changing direction? Did they not trust the indicator lights? _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |
