|
|
Hi Guys,
I wonder if I could ask for a little help here please - I was approached today by one of the Research Curators involved in the creation of our new Museum of Transport and I suggested that this place would be a good place to start. Below is what he asked me to post -
..................................................................................................................................................
1960s Mini Drivers wanted
Glasgow's Museum of Transport has a 1959 Morris Mini. If you drove a Mini sometime between 1959 and 1970 we would love to hear from you.
What was it like to drive? Where did you go? Why did you drive a Mini? We are looking for all kinds of memories from all kinds of people - memories about family trips, technical problems and day-to-day activities.
Our Mini will star in a display in the new Museum of Transport that is due to be completed in 2011.
Many thanks for any assistance, Crawford McGugan.
.....................................................................................................................................................................
If anybody (or somebody you know) fits the bill and is willing to share their experiences would they be kind enough to PM me their contact details and I will pass them on to Crawford? Could I ask for a telephone number, a contact time (preferably during working hours - 9am to 5pm) and a brief outline of when and what you owned / drove would be really helpful.
Thanks guys, Scotty. |

Scotty, is there any particular reason they have 1970 as the cut-off date? |

Hi UJ,
Leave that with me and I'll find out.

Hi again UJ,
I've spoken with Crawford and the reason is the Mini is being placed into a specific time period display with a number of other objects that reflect the date range mentioned. He understands that limits a lot of good accounts from after 1970, however he has to ensure the time period is adhered to.

Scotty, though my Mini was a 65 model, I owned it in the early 70's, so the stories I have are from that time. Sorry. |

I'm in the same boat UJ; my brother and I had 8 Mini's from 1970, each one a voyage either into skinned knuckles, rusty sub-frames, 6" wide alloys (that did in the wheel bearings all the time, but looked really cool), knocking CV joints or me being fit to burst with the BL dealers after I'd bought my first brand new one in 1979 and watched the paint peel off!
So like you I'm sitting here with all these stories but Crawford can't use them - Arrrgh!
Thanks anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to ask. |

Scotty, I'm sure that Rick would appreciate your stories for the main site. I know that he appreciated mine. |

Dont forget that this applies to all of you,as well. If you feel a little shy about having your motoring memories on the web, then maybe a spoof character could be created, and join all the stories together?
Just a thought! |

Hi Scotty does it have to be driving? In the mid 60s I did a bit of rally navigating in club rallies (nothing too involved) from the passenger seat of a mildly tuned Mini, and I can probably dig out one or two memories from the murky depths of my brain

Hi Geoff,
It can't do any harm that's for sure - and it may be an aspect of Mini use that Crawford hadn't considered. If you're comfortable with supplying some contact details by sending me a PM I'll be sure to pass them on to Crawford.
Thanks for letting us know. |

Thats right, any old motoring yarns I could find a home for, in the nostalgia/memories bit of the site

here's one for you then rick. move it as you feel fit. I owned a 1963 MK1 Humber Septre in 1984. The original engine was one of the Holby (?) alluminium 1725 ones and I managed to cook it. We were going on holiday two days later to devon in it so had to buy a replacement 1725 hillman hunter engine which the exchange garage said was better than those old ally things (??) so away we wen. Got the engine on the hoist and into the engine bay and I couldn't get the splined shaft that goes from the engine into the gearbox lined up so here am I ramming the engine back and forth trying to get the splines to line up and my 12 year old ( at the time ) cousin said Whoa hold on a minute Alan, go and make a cup of coffee. I returned to the back street some 10 minutes later and here he is under the car bolting the gearbox back onto the engine.
We got it all connected up, tested, washed and polished and traveled from the north east to Devon on holiday the next day. When the overdrive worked ( you had to get under the car and hit it with a hammer when it didn't ) we got 55 mpg when it didn't the heavy beast got about 23 mpg.
It also took me 3.25 hours to push it single handed 1/2 a mile home one day.......
Yup halcion days of motoring. |

I did go on a visit around the BMC or was it BL near Brum. Was it Longford ? I cannot remember. Anyway back to the story.... I was told that the time and study men where not allowed to put a stop watch on the workers. So what they had do was the job them selves , one doing the the job and the other working the stop watch. So they decided to check up on the guy that straightened the cam shafts after forging , you had to straighten them before they could be machined, hardened and ground. After 2 days they gave up and let him get on with the job , no matter what they paid him ! I used to straighten spooling shafts after harding , some came back looking like bananas , after a couple of weeks it got easy... They had to be within a few thou. for grinding. |

Hi Guys,
I'm going to close this line of enquiry as I've now been able to get a number of offers from this and one other web site I'm a member of.
Thanks to all who contacted me, and my apologies to those who offered, but their experiences didn't quite fit the bill.
I've passed the contact details on to the Curator who should contact you in the fullness of time, but I'd better mention it may be a wee while before you hear from him as its a large project with a lot of people involved.
Many thanks to everybody who took an interest. |
