I saw this very well restored GT6 in Hamburg the other day, even managed to have a bit of a chat to the owner, as I did see that there was something interesting (to me at least) about the car. I wonder if any of you others realise what? Shocked

I don't know if it's significant but it only appears to have one badge at the rear. Do they not usually have one saying Triumph and another saying GT6?

Rick, you are spot on. It is an american market model. The owner had done a private import, and restored it himself. To a very high standard, I will add. They way it looked, it could have been a new car parked outside a Triumph dealer.

I was stumped with one comment though. The car has a regularly occuring gearbox problem. I certainly never had any such problems on my Vitesse, even though it had the 2.5 motor. Could it be a one off problem? I always remember Triumphs as being well engineered cars.

The GT6 was, imho, a far better car than its rival, the MGBGT. Far smoother, and with a lovely exhaust note....

Yes I really like the GT6 too. My Spit/GT6 had the 2.5 (I wonder where GRO 536G is now) and a guy I knew at work had a Mk2 GT6, also with a 2.5, fitted with triple Dellortos. I don't remember the gearboxes being a particularly weak link either, apart from the overdrive switch occasionally refusing to play.

I suppose that the GT6 is in some ways a forgotten classic.

Do you know if body panels and such like are still available for them? Again referring to the MGB, I know that it is possible to buy new bodyshells for those. Is it the same for the Triumphs?

Practical classics magazine recently restored a GT6 as an on-going project, some lucky beggar won it as a prize.

Digging through my old magazines the other day I read a feature on the GT6 pitched up against the MGB and it confirmed your feelings UJ, the GT6 came out on top for a number of reasons.

Hi UJ,

Could I add what stands out for me are the Federal side marker lights, I remember seeing a lot of export cars fitted with them in American ads. At one time you could even buy them over here as a accessory to "US'ify your car, if you were so inclined.

When I had my Spitfire I bought a lot of parts from Rimmer Bros.

I had a quick look through their pages and much to my surprise I don't see a complete main body, lots of body panels, but no "shell" so to speak of.
I used to lust after a GT6's straight-6 for the Spitfire, but never could find one when I had the money, they always seemed to turn up just as I became skint! Rolling Eyes

Scotty. Wink

One thing I do have, not for the GT6, but the Herald, is a set of drawings for the chassis. I have been known to weld one or two up from scratch to earn a few bob!

Shame that no complete shell is available though!

Yes you can buy virtually everything, including new bonnets (at least for the Mk3 GT6 I think), but no complete tub. They're prone to rotting out above the screen, in addition to the usual Spit rotspots (sills, floors etc).
