I thought I would do one of those outstanding jobs on the car namely getting the speedo to work. The cable turns when the car is in gear and when you poke a match stick in the back of the speedo drive the pointer works however when you put the cable into the speedo nothing happens. Finally figured out the problem - the speedo cable turns anti clock wise whereas the speedo needs to be turned clockwise!

The speedo is off an MGB (I Think) model no SN5230/13 whereas the speedo cable is driven off the torque tube on an E93A set up. So I need to find a suitable speedo which will fit into an 80 mm hole on the dashboard which will work with an anticlockwise drive.

Any suggestions?

What diameter is the standard Ford Pop speedo? could the hole be enlarged to take that, or does it not read high enough Wink

Hi Rick - I want to keep to the smae diameter speedo as the dash has been cut to that size. I have been recommended to Speedograph Richfield who do reversing boxes for speedos but before doing so can anyone advise me if the speedo takeoff that bolts to the torque tube can be attached 'the other way round' - if this is the case then presumably the cable will turn the opposite way. I need to get the original speedo out and find out which way that works.

I have a vague recollection, many moons ago, of a mate of mine who owns an upright Prefect, being able to connect the speedo drive cable to the other side of this torque tube, causing the mileometer and speedo to run backwards. Without digging out the manuals I can't be sure if my memory has gone a little wobbly on this, or if in fact the cable can be connected to either side of the t/tube or not?

I own a Morgan Threewheeler, and the speedo drive is taken from the left side of the final drive, therefore turns clockwise. There is a standard Chronometric speedo that runs in "reverse", although I do know of a clubmember who took the drive from the sprocket side of the gearbox, allowing the conventional anti-clockwise drive.
Speedograph are based in Nottingham (as am I), and are familiar with the reverse drive speedos.
As an afterthought, if you intend to reverse the drive of your speedo, it is important that you obtain a speedo cable wound in the correct direction.

Thanks Ka & Rick - problem now resolved. I turned the drive unit on the torque tube ( the unit was not fitted when I acquired the car) and I now have a speedo that works. Your advice was much appreciated.
