I hate seeing original numbers ripped off old cars, simply to make a fast buck. Over the last week or so I've seen some distinctive numbers on modern cars while driving about. Some personalised numbers obviously came off an old car at some point (grrr), others are later numbers sold direct from DVLA I guess.
Recent sightings:
R4 CER ("RACER") spotted on the M1, fitted to a rapid Audi. I wonder who owns that one??
911 NUT seen on a yellow Porker last week near here
BU52 BUS ("BUS 2 BUS") seen on a Range Rover, either someone interested in buses, or more likely operating in the Business to Business service world.

There's a blingy Range Rover somewhere near me with the reg 'MMM1'.
The plate on my Dodge was allocated by Swansea & is non-transferable.
A friend of mine has 'C4EVY' on his '05 Silverado SS, but he bought that new from DVLA. The '4' is portrayed like an 'H' with one leg missing. _________________ Don't run your fingers over my truck & I won't run my truck over your fingers!

The one that made the most impression on me was several years ago.
It was a hot summer day and there were two absolutely gorgeous blondes (models I'd say) driving a mint 70's Mercedes convertible, and the reg No?
BAD130Y (Bad Boy)
I'm sure he was...lucky bleeder! |

Some ramblings from a cherished number enthusiast.
I dislike the date letter registrations and have managed to get them off all my cars.
I agree that I prefer the number to remain on the original car wherever possible, but I know of several restorations that would not have happened without the finance provided by the sale of the plate.
I first transferred a number plate in 1970, when all I had to do was to take two old green log books to my local council offices pay £5.00 and the clerk changed the entries in the log books and issued a new number for the donor on the spot.
This was due to my purchase of a Vauxhall Victor with the letters MFU that I didn't like but I had a Morris Minor Traveller from my student days that had the plate RVY606 and was destined for the breakers in a month or two.
Since then I have acquired four plates but have never paid anything for any of them, and in some cases even made a profit selling the cars that previously carried my number!
This pic shows my current collection
My classic 1970 Volvo Amazon carries WOY2 that I got in 1975 from a friend who was about to scrap his S-Type Jag that had just one week left on the MOT. I had to tow the car to the DVLA Office for the inspection, did the transfer and then advertised the independent rear suspension to a hot rod builder for £250 - he was surprised and delighted to be told that he had to take the whole car away! This is the fourth car the number has been on.
My Cherokee has UUU669 that was on my previous classic, a Rover P4 that I sold to a guy in the USA, so there was no point leaving the plate on the car. In Texas he can get any plate and so got the same letters and numbers and the car still carries the original UK plates with his US plate under the back bumper.
The wife's BMW has T111ABM as the dealer was offering a free £250 plate as a special offer. This was originally spaced to read TINA BM
After only a couple of months she was followed by a Police car right into a multi-storey car park, stopped by them blasting their siren, and was issued with a seven day notice to get it changed. A bit mean I thought, as it was perfectly readable.
I also have 2536PU on retention that came off a Ford 100E that I bought from the local paper for £100 without an MOT. It had stood for five years and was destined for the crusher. Cost me about £20 to get it through and the car was sold for £250 as a starter classic to a young enthusiast.
The interest in old cars and number plates must be genetic as my son has MXI 914 on his Porsche 914 and L10TKA to read HOT KA on his wife's KA.
In case you are wondering about the wall of plates in front of the Jeep, this is a display of a US plate from each of the 50 states, and the UK plates removed from cars I or my family have owned and a few from other countries that I have collected over the years.
The collection was featured in "Intersection" magazine in Spring 2007 as a backdrop to a fashion shot. This was following a lead on here and there is a thread about this somewhere on the forum. _________________ Brian
