Older members will remember this has come up before on here, but it can't harm bringing up the subject again as lots of people have joined since then.
The support of one's nearest and dearest can be essential when buying/running/maintaining one or more old jalopies.
Have you managed to get your lady (or gent) to see the merits of cable operated brakes, and the excellent demisting properties of opening quarterlights?? your thoughts please
I posted this on another forum today, about my own good lady, erindoors:
"Mrs RJ is fortunately 'on side'. From our early days together I introduced her to the delights of fading chrome, and it worked somewhat better than planned, in that she opted to run an A30 as her daily mover for a few years.
She 'gets' most of what I like about old vehicles, although strangely prefers ones that run, to those that don't and just get a pat on the wing from time to time, so we differ on that one. Old lorries and pickups are probably her favourites (no idea where she gets that from), older the better. She is quite vocal about cars from the '60s onwards, in a not-altogether flattering way, and if the subject of '70s+ cars is raised, I usually have to duck for cover. But that's fine as I rarely stray into the post-Beatles world anyway. She prefers restored cars, I prefer original.
The only proviso is that nothing must be left on the drive for any length of time."

I am an "other half" and in fact it was because of old vehicles that we got together. Life is all about give & take, so I support Sniper (Mike) with his hobby and he supports me with my patchwork & scouting.
We all go to car shows (the kids including), camp at some of them and have a blinking good time with our car club friends. OK, at times I do have to step in and say enough is enough and we're not doing this or that for whatever reason. Sometimes you men do need reminding that there is more to life than just things with wheels!
It's also nice that both our kids, James 8 and Lizzie 5 are into cars and that does make things easier. Both of them like to go off for the day with daddy, so mummy can either spend "me time". It's nice that Mike will take just one out as well, so we can spend quality time with each of the children and it gives us something to talk about. Speaking to several of my friends that don';t really have any hobbies, this is something that they don't seem to do. (So what do they do if they don't talk, on second thoughts might be best not to answer that )
I don't do oily bits, but I do try to help out where I can, even if it is only to make a cuppa for him and his mates or wash a car when he hasn't got time. _________________ 1953 Humber Hawk

| I am so lucky in the fact that I do not have an other half. Makes life so much easier. But having said that my oldest child (only 7) does think mummy has lost the plot sometimes when I am drooling over cars... |

I don't have a 'better half' either. If I did, she'd probably take all my money instead of the Dodge.
It's just as well, actually, 'cos atleast the truck won't lie to me... _________________ Don't run your fingers over my truck & I won't run my truck over your fingers!

Hi
As I think I replied last time, things haven't changed really, still spend my money on cars instead of the female gender, but I now get alot of teasing from people at work. I couldn't care less!
I did make an online dating profile, but have had no takers, I said the ideal woman, could do with being a time served mechanic, and that I could do with them being a very patient cooking teacher for me. Then if they enjoy the steam world all the better.
I just am finding it hard why no one has replied...
Ah well!
Cheers
Dave |

Dave there is a very nice female mechanic at my local garage, shall I put in a good word for you
Back to the question "Does your other half approve/understand??"
Before I even read any of the answers I thought of what my reply was and it is exactly word for word the same as Red Riley, In a word, no.
She tolerates my "habit" and appreciates it is better than going out to the pub, but "cannot see what it is about old cars that facinates me". _________________ ROVER

The memsahib used to love using the 10/4 for shopping and even used to drive it down to Dorset behind the car and caravan for the steam fairs in the late 80s. When I had my heart attack and couldn't drive she drove the camper to shows with the 10/4 on a trailer.
These days she's not so adventurous. She is spoiled by her little Korean Rio and although she keeps mentioning using the Austin for shopping the lack of power steering may come as a shock.
Memsahib is quite willing to tolerate the garage being full of cars, boats and outboard motors as long as she can cover the walls in the house with her paintings, fill the bookcases withe her Art, gardening and cookery books and go on painting holidays in exotic places.
I think you could say there's a certain amount of give-and-take in our relationship.

I am perhaps, one of the luckiest men on the planet. My wife of 24 years is just as big a "gear-head" as am I! She enjoys car shows, swap meets, cruising, and even helps me restore old cars, gas pumps, and Coke machines. She can take them apart, sand & wire brush, paint, lay up fiberglass, you name it. She is so much into the hobby with me, I bought her a 1965 Mustang of her own
When I had a bout with intestinal cancer many years back, she and the kids tore down my old pole barn shed to make way for a 1000 square foot garage with lights, concrete floor, engine lifts & stands, and they even hung a sign over the 20 foot door that says "Dad`s Toy Shop". By the time my hospital stay and recovery were over, I had a whole new play area! |

My other half is cool, she enjoys most aspects of classic vehicles, takes an interest in our Chevy and can hold her own with petrol heads when it comes down to discussions about our car.
The only down-side is she tends to get a bit bored with those shows that are the same format year after year after year, particularly those that don't have diversions for "other halfs". |

I'm awaiting Lady Gillberry's comments on this topic.
Sniper has been outside since 8.00am this morning working on the new Snipe, he even brought me a cup of coffee in bed too (doesn't happen that often) If he finishes out there nice and early and we can take the kiddies out then I won't complain. _________________ 1953 Humber Hawk
