I am looking for an industrial machine capable of stitching leather and piping carpet.
I live in France but could have it picked up by friends visiting all the bloody time Rolling Eyes

Greeney: Having bought a car trim business a couple of years ago, I wonder if you know what you should be looking for in terms of machines?

Not really any info would be welcome.
I have worked with a couple of machines I recovered my S'Type Jag seats and it wins concours competitons so I am not bad if a little slow compared to a pro. I have always borrowed a machine but dont know the make etc

If we take the carpet side first, these machines are generally called ''whippers.'' IF you can find one, then get it, because they are by all accounts, very rare. Be careful thoughnot to let someone fool you into buying an overlock machine. They look very similar, but wont do the job.

For car interior work, look a machine that has a walking foot. My own are a Durkopp and a Pfaff, the Durkopp being the better of the two. My machines are old, but spares are still readily available. The biggest problem with old machnes is that they are usually for 3 phase electricity. Newer machines run on single phase, but they tend to be expensive, here at least. Also look for a machine that has either a Varistop or Quickstop motor.

I dont want to do edge binding on the carpet just maybe a leather or vinyl edge trim sewn on do I need a "whipper" for the latter or is that just for that bound edge.
I understand quikstop motor but why is walking foot better?

A walking foot, or walking needle on some machines pulls the material through one stitch at a time. Very useful when the material gets heavy. Reversing is a good feature to have, as well as a thread cutter.

Dont forget that some machines need a compressed air supply as well.

Personally, I'm not to keen on using a vinyl trim at the carpets edge, but to do it there are little gizmos that can be bolted to the machine. I think!

Unfortunately quite a few cars have the vinyl edging sewn on as original standard even my S'type Jag and my DS
