Hi , this is my first post to this site . I am hoping that somebody can give me some information on our new purchase.
We are in New Zealand and own a caravan yard but restore vintage caravans for ourselves.
We have just purchased a 1956 Burlingham Sandringham that was imported to NZ in the late 1950's and has had 2 NZ owners. It is a supurb caravanand in quite tidy order for its age.
We have restored 2 New Zealand 1950's Bellevue caravans and one is a Deluxe model and has a complete oak interior ,rounded cupbaords, lots of chrome and some very unique featues. It gets alot of attention and is very retro looking I will try and add some photos and also a couple of outside shots of the Burlingham.
I have been trying to research the Burlingham and are not having much luck . We would like to retore it to the standard of our other caravans but firstly need to know some details.
I found a photo Burlingham that Rick has posted on this forum which is apparently in a museum
I am hoping that all you vintage caravan enthusiasts can enlighten us on some history of these vans and more so the Sandringham model. It has a badge which says Garstag? Lancashire .
Also we think the roof may have originally been canvas. It has been replaced with tin and if so we would like to put it back to original.
Any information whatsover would be greatly appreciated .
With our Bellevue caravan we have a collection of original photos of Bellevues (only 13 -15 ever made)in the construction stages and of the man that made them (solely) and it makes them so much more valuable to us having this history.
We have the Bellevues on our website as 'display models' so if these photos don't show well then please do go to our website and have a look.

In the mean time I eagerly await even the most trivial bits of information.
Jenny

Hi jenny, Nice to see a Burlingham there a rare sight over here never mind in NewZeland !. i know of five survivers in and out of the historic caravan club three windermears, one sportsman, and a 16 foot van who's model name i cannot remember ! of these vans three are restored .
Burlinghams where a top of the range van, of the time and everything was always of the best quality.
your tin roof may be orignal as it was practise of the time to make the roof in alloy and cover it in canvas.
The Garstang badge is i think where the works were.
I have a mate who has owned three of these vans and may be able to supply some more information
Like your bellevue van looks like a vary competent restoration well done !
Regards.. Paul

hi
Why don't you drop them a line (unfortunately they don't seem to have email just this ad on the local web page).
There may still be someone connected with the firm who remembers when they made caravans.

Hey Paul , really appreciate the reply.
We are very excited about restoring this caravan .
We are lucky enough to have a couple of good workers who are very competant and help us with the odd bit of woodwork that is beyond our capabilities.
In New Zealand the caravan market came to a bit of a halt in the late 1980's because of a leisure tax that caused alot of the manufacturers to close down . A few carried on custom making for clients. There is now a dramatic jump in price between these older models to the newer NZ models that are now in production. The 1970's to 1980's + models are still extremely popular with most families here and that is what we mainly deal in. Also we sell a lot of larger caravans for permanent living so we do a lot of work on these caravans. We do also import British caravans and sell some new, but NZ'ers love the older models. NZ caravans were really made to last and we have workers that do work on them for us.

It is very rare however to find good condition pre 1960's models so we were extremly lucky with both the Burlingham and the Bellevues.

We are keen to know as much as possible.. We would be very keen to make some sort of contact with your friend, if possible ,as he sounds as if he would know alot about them.
We were told that there was only 2 of the Sandringham models made but not sure where that bit of info. originated from or if it is correct.

Does your friend belong to this forum?
Once again , many thanks
Regards
Jenny & Graham

HI Jenny and Graham
I have had a chat with my mate about his burlinghams, and his nohow of
Burlinghams was about the same as mine !
If you join the Historic caravan club i am sure the club historian will help you out.
There is a fair bit of info in the book. The History of the Caravan, by W.M. Whiteman this is one of the best books on vintage british vans
And there is one on Ebay at the mo !
If there is anything your not sure about email me i will try my best to help
Regards Paul

Hi Jenny and Graham

Great looking vans, particularly like the Burlingham.

With reference to information about the company I have some in various publications which I shall try to cobble together and send off to you as soon as possible. I also have in a book an advert which they placed back in about 1947. This states that you could "Inspect these COACHBUILT caravans" at Garstang By-Pass, Garstang, Lancashire as Paul stated.

Will contact you soon

It was good to see a picture of your Burlingham; the only one I know of is at the Lakeland Motor Museum near Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria.

I know 'Burlingham Caravans' quite well though. They are situated on the A6 on the outskirts of Garstang between Preston and Lancaster and continue to sell touring caravans. They also used to allow people to site caravans. My grandmother had a caravan sited with them back in the late 1960's, although not a Burlingham, as I remember![/i]

Hi Penman,
no not yet .
We are frantic at work and have not been spending much time or energy on personal matters. Caravans are our work and lately take up all 7 days for us . Extremely busy times with the caravan boom we are having here.
We did manage to get hold of someone from the lakeland museum who was very helpful will be taking some photos for us of the one that is there. He is apparently coming to Christchurch NZ in a week or 2 so we are hopeing to hear from him soon.
Will still definately ring Burlingham Caravans when we have more time to spend on our research!.
Our caravan is at one of our workers place who has doing a lot of the interior for us. He is making great progress. If we were to do all the work it simply would sit here for years as we are frequently so tied up. Great to have the workers!! Graham is doing a great management job though!! . It is completely stripped and has had all the latches , catches, windows frames, sink, etc restored by our local metal polish to their original shining glory. Will get some photos posted as soon as humanly possible... and ring Burlingham !!!!!!!!!!

Hi
I called in at Burlingham today.

Unfortunately Mr Burlingham and his son-in-law who took the business on have both died and there were no further family members.
A chap who worked with Mr Burlingham also died a couple of yrs ago.

They told me about the one at Lakeland Motor Museum, who I believe you have been in touch with, and apparently there is another in Blackburn, Lancs which is near me so I will keep my eyes peeled while driving about.

In the meantime here are some photos of photgraphs which they have on the walls at Burlingham Caravans.

Hi Penman ,
I have been away from the computer for a week having a small op. on my foot and Graham is not too computer savvy!!!.

Great to get back today to find your message.
Thanks soooo much for the photos and info.

Sad that there seems to be no one left that we can get that 'straight from the horses mouth 'info from. I suppose we are going to get that dealing with the vintage era!!!

We are still waiting to hear back from the people from Lakeland Museum ....don't know if I'm just impatient but sometimes its difficult waiting and more often than not ,getting no response.

Graham was over the moon we he saw more evidence of other Burlinghams from your photos.
Do you know if the other one you mentioned is privately owned . We still have yet to find another private owner.
Also our model (Sandringham) seems to be a name no-one has heard of.

I am about to print off your photos for Graham to plaster on the office wall.
Once again , we really appreciate you taking the time to go into Burlingham.
Jenny
