Rick, if you have oil dropping onto the exhaust pipe, then here is an Uncle Joes top tip....USE CASTROL 'R'

As a former girlfriend said to me once, after I had told here that her eyes were as blue as the chrome on my Triumphs exhaust....''I spend £25 on a bottle of perfume, and you still prefer the snell of burnt Castrol R!'' Laughing Laughing Laughing

Is this topic getting silly?

UJ, I just wish the forum has smellavision.

I'd call it 'aromavision'.

I wouldn't want this feature on my TV, not with all the cr*p they show - I wouldn't be able to stay in the room! Laughing

And yes, it is getting silly.

On a more serious note, I'm having to source the wood to use as the base for the buck in my pick-up. I have been advised to use a 'b@st@rd mahogany', one by the name of 'Rioca' (sp?) - the same stuff they use for lorry trailers.
Is this the ideal choice, or does anyone know any better?

J-R, I had a look in my little book. I couldnt find Rioca, and B-mahogany refers to a wide range of different woods. So you would have to be very careful as to what you are going to buy.

What you choose depends on what you are going to use the load bed for. I could think of several that would be suitable, some for pure appearence, some for practicality. Are there any particular finished shades you are thinking of for the finished wood? Are you looking for a highly figured wood?

I'd like the bed to be more for appearance than practicality, but I also want it to be able to cope with weathering.
I'm after as light a shade as I can, without looking like something from IKEA.

Keruing seems to be a popular choice with lorry builders, some more info:

You've made me really nostalgic for my old P2 by showing that dashboard. The part I particularly liked was the tiny starter button and the way the engine sprang to life with a gentle hiss. Unfortunately I scratched a girlfriends phone number on the wood of mine. can't believe I really did it now. Crying or Very sad

Don.

J-R, then I have a couple of suggestions for you. All of them are relatively easy to get hold of. In no particular order:

Larch, which can have a nice pinky tint, and is often used for boat decks.

Maple, harder than oak. An alternative from the same family (Acer) is Fiddleback, which you have possibly seen stained red on Santanas guitar.

Otherwise, if you still have my email address, look on my website for some of the exotics...

Thanks, UJ. When I get the truck back, I'll be checking in for your advice.
