Do you think it is right to pay to enter your car in an event because if we all refused there would be no event.
I am being a bit extreme with that statement.I dont mind paying a couple of quid to enter my car because it covers the cost of a programme and an attendance award. There are some events though that want 5 or 6 quid to enter an event but the public only pays 3 quid to get in....hardly fair is it....so now we just go elsewhere. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

this topic crops up from time to time, but its an important one. I personally feel that exhibitors should not have to pay to exhibit, although I do stomach a couple of quid if needs be (no more). One local village organiser tried to claw back losses from another (non car-related) event by charging exhibitors to their car event a £5 entry fee, which was especially rum as members of the public were not charged to view the event, so many people including me boycotted it. Buzzy bee told me today that there is no fee for this year's event...

When I used to attend shows on a regular basis in the 80s and 90s a few shows tried to charge. None of us went and the shows were not heard of again. There was one show in Sussex tried to charge exhibitors for camping, they dropped it the following year but exhibitor numbers were down for many years afterwards.
There is usually an alternative show somewhere that does not charge.
There is one exeption: The Faversham Classic car show, It is in aid of the Air Ambulance and any profits go to that worthy cause, the town is closed off to all except classic cars and bikes, there is a carnival atmosphere with jazz bands and more pubs than you could shake a stick at. Well worth a few quid to attend.

| If the show is for charity, then I dont mind paying. But if its just to line someones pocket, then I simply dont go. After all, what are we paying for? To stand around in a field, and provide entertainment for others... |

Over here we pay!
Most local shows charge $10 per car for a one day meet.
National type shows such as the ones that GOODGUYS put on, charge $40 to $50 for members and $70 for non-members. These are usually 3-day shows. |

I don't mind paying a few pounds.
There is one show that I attend that gives a £5.00 token for a meal and entry is free which is a bargain as it is only a few miles from me.
The most expensive that I attend costs me £10.00 which I think is rather expensive, but they say it only pays for the ground rental and prizes and nothing left over. _________________ ROVER

I don't mind paying at all. I get as much enjoyment looking around at all the other vehicles, taking pics & chatting & that makes me feel I got my money's worth.
Besides, I also feel it's worth it to show my car & see/hear people's reactions to it. _________________ Don't run your fingers over my truck & I won't run my truck over your fingers!

I`m not sure how a quid stacks up to a US dollar, but we pay $35.00 to enter our car in the Daytona "Turkey Run" every Thanksgiving, and another $15.00 for a 2 hour video of the event.
The $35.00 entry fee gets your car, and all it`s occupants, into the event for all 4 days, plus a goodie bag with coupons, samples, an event dash plaque, magnet, drinking cup, and a color programme.
Then I usually get an event T-Shirt, another $15.00.
But considering that one spectator for one day is $15.00, I think the $35.00 is very reasonable for a carload all weekend.
Now, I did turn away from a "GoodGuy`s" show where they wanted $60.00 entry fee! _________________ "The only thing I`m sure of.....is that I`m not sure of anything!" |

Not that my car is anything special, but with one small exception (£1.00) I will not pay a penny to attend a show - period!
As a matter of fact I believe it should be the organisors who should be paying us. Why on earth should they make money off our backs with all our time, effort and our own hard earned cash, and then still have the balls to ask us to pay - in their dreams.
I can think of a couple of shows up here where its a profit making exercise, plain and simple and as long as I draw a breath they'll never see me at it.
This hobby is expensive enough without others cashing in on it. |

Some of the big hot rod shows charge a simular amount over here for weekends shows. The big one that JR & we go to in Ipswich August bank holiday is around £25-40 depending if you prebook are are members of the club or not. This does include 3 nights entertainment and camping.
But it does cost quite a bit to set up a show, hiring the site, toilets, first-aid cover, insurance etc. There are several shows locally that are run to make money, but there are a lot that rasie a lot of money for charties.
This subject is another can of worms and is down to personal choice. I think on that note, I'll leave this one. _________________ 1953 Humber Hawk

And I think that`s key here. Similar to a musical concert. You pay big money for a ticket, but the musician doesn`t get all of it, some is to rent the hall, promotion, etc.
But I see Scotty`s point as well, the car show I mentioned makes money from both ends....participants AND spectators. Oh, AND they collect money for vendors to set up in the swap meet too. _________________ "The only thing I`m sure of.....is that I`m not sure of anything!" |

I've been on both sides of this one, and sadly its the health and safety brigade who are responsible for more and more costs for shows. That said I never enter a show where I am asked to pay even approaching what Joe Public pays to get in. Sadly, if, as an organiser, you extract £x from exhibitors they do have a tendency to show up!
As others have commented, our vehicles make the show and it is them that attract in the public with their cash. If organisers get greedy then they quickly kill the golden goose! |

| oldgto has a bit of a point, comparing car shows to music concerts. At a concert, the artist is paid. So therefore at a car show exhibitors should be paid...Or? |
