Hemsby and Caister used to compete for the best "weekend" they did rock and roll and soul weekends during the summer always attracted thousands of people from all over the country and Europe too It was usually a "Pontins" or Butlins do. As a local we used to know how to sneak in through the fence without paying when they were in the grounds of the holiday park. The cars used to "parade" into Gt Yarmouth too which was a great sight.
I met many a bad girl looking for a raunchy weekend I have some very full memories
I left home at 19 so only had a couple of years of driving to them but I did get my Mk1 Escort RS2000 in the parade one year albiet doing about 15mpg with its 2twinchoke webers and comp engine _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com

They still do that, that's where the pics were taken - last year the whole of the Yarmouth front was closed off & the cars filled the road. This year, Gt. Yarmouth council denied permission claiming too much trade was lost to local businesses last year, so it was only the forecourt of a 50's style American Diner which was used. Hence only about 30 cars & a few bikes. _________________ Don't run your fingers over my truck & I won't run my truck over your fingers!

cool my old weekend stomping ground when there was no hemsby or caister weekend
We used to use the Acle straight as our car test track, is it still there or has it been tuned into a ring road?
The Stacey arms was often being hit by stray out of control vehicles as it was the only kink in the road from an otherwise straight 12miles _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com

The Acle straight is still there - so is the Stracey Arms, but there's now a 40mph speed limit through the kink. The pub doesn't fare too well & is often closed.
There was talk many years ago of dualling the A47 Acle straight, but it never happened.
Off topic:
The Govt. recently stated that there may be plans on the cards to let the sea come in as far as South Walsham & build new sea defences. As a result, house prices instantly dropped in a huge area & all the home owners complained. The Govt. then retracted the statement, saying it was just a thought.
Too late & damage done. _________________ Don't run your fingers over my truck & I won't run my truck over your fingers!

I've been meaning to go for years but never got round to it. Rock n roll and hotrods are 2 of my favorite things. That fenderless 34 is lovely. |

Norwich is a popular place, i was dragged up at weekends at Caister, Scratby, California & Hemsby as we used to rent out caravans on the sites in the area and had to go down and clean them out every weekend, luckly we now only have a bungalow still at Scratby and rent that out full time, my other half come from birmingham so loves the coast and sea but to me it is like a second home so does not hold the same feel as I was always there, the best bit was Dunston Hall School - lots of young men |
